Light in Babylon comes out loud and clear, across time and space. Since 2017, the band has been joined by bassist Payam Ghasemi, and drummer Stuart Dickson. Their youtube videos have millions of views.
The trio now performs on stage with the support of two other musicians, the percussionist Stuart Dickson and the bassist Priam Arnoux.

Istanbul based ethno folk ensemble Light In Babylon are one of the last years freshest musical exports of Turkey.
Accordingly, their music is popular across numerous intersections of identity, nationality, and religion, resonating with people around the globe. They have toured in Turkey, Cyprus, Germany, Switzerland, France, Hungary, Greece, Finland, India… They also are getting more attention from media, they appear regularly on turkish TV Trt Haber DD and Trt Music, in a few documentaries about the Turkish music scene and appeared also on the german/french Arte Channel.
The trio formed initially out of a casual jamming arrangement, in which each spoke different languages but found common ground in music.[1][2]
The biblical story of the Tower of Babel inspired the band’s moniker, alluding to how the medium of music enabled the three members to play together despite initial difficulties in communicating.[3]
As a newly-founded trio, Light in Babylon played extensively on the Beyoğlu District’s Independence Avenue, a thoroughfare known for music performances of diverse genres and instrumentation.

Praised by fRoots Magazine as “A celebration of the cosmopolitan traditions of both Istanbul and the Sephardic Jewish community and another example of the great music that is coming out of the Eastern Mediterranean right now”, Light in Babylon brought to the world scene their first official album “Life sometimes doesn’t give you space” in 2012 and on November 2016 their new second album “Yeni Dunya” (which means in Turkish – New World)
Their project is the fusion of different ethnicities and cultures, the singer is Israeli from Iranian origin, the santur player is Turkish the guitarist is French and they cooperate with musicians from different origin as well (Turkish, English and more).
With the strength and openness of their youth and the various musical influences they have, they intuitively created a original colourful blend of their inner voices with flavours that would carry the imagination on a travel trough the Middle east and beyond.
What became the core trio of the band met in 2010 in Istanbul.

Light in Babylon is an international band that formed in 2010, consisting of singer Michal Elia Kamal (Hebrew language|Hebrew: מיכל אליה קמל), guitarist Julien Demarque, and santurist Metehan Çiftçi.
Genres that have influenced the band’s style include Music of Turkish music, Balkan songs, gypsy traditions, classical and pop music.[4]
The band’s style is informed in its ethos and philosophy by the conviction that songs can create a new world of shared humanism. Personal experiences of travel, Cosmopolitanism|cosmopolitan friendships, cultural exile resulting from the Iranian Revolution have inspired the band to explore themes of freedom, soul, and shared humanity.[5]
Songs are sung in various languages, combining Hebrew,Turkish,Persia,Farsi,English.
