In his later years, Amuchastegui ventured into the digital world, sharing content on his YouTube channel, where he accumulated more than 30,000 subscribers.
Despite undergoing two surgeries, the disease had already spread to his bladder wall and severely impacted his health, causing one of his kidneys to stop functioning.
Following the procedures, Amuchástegui began immunotherapy, which left him deeply fatigued and physically weakened. A teacher. A lord. He began architecture studies at the University of the Andes, however his passion for theater drove him to join the university theater group, where he discovered his true calling.
He continued his drama studies in Paris, training at the Universite Internationale du Theatre and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London.
Upon returning to Colombia in the late 1960s, he founded the La Mama theater, significantly contributing to the development of independent theater in the country.
Although he dedicated many years to theater, widespread public recognition would came later, with his television appearances–especially his role in the popular series Betty, la Feawhich began airing in 1999.
He had been battling bladder cancer, an illness he had only recently revealed. "He was my director in the first soap opera in which I had a leading role," he wrote on social media, referring to 'The Chosen One'.

Veteran Colombian actor Kepa Amuchástegui, best known for his roles in iconic telenovelas like "Yo Soy Betty, La Fea" and "La Nieta Elegida," has died following a battle with advanced bladder cancer.
"On May 27 at 11:11 pm, our beloved Kepa Amuchastegui passed away.
"I want to tell you that I won't be able to continue working in my profession, and because of that, I won't be able to keep earning a living," he said candidly in a video message.
He even turned down an offer to return to the theater, a space he had long considered his true home. Now wheelchair-bound, the veteran performer reached out to his fans for financial support to help cover the cost of his treatment.
Mourning in soap operas
This son of Basque immigrants settled in Colombia was born in Bogotá on December 9, 1941, and fell in love with the performing arts while participating in the university theater group, where he was studying architecture.
After a decade in Europe training as an actor, he returned to his country in 1971, where he specialized in theater.
Amuchastegui played the role of Roberto Mendoza, the majority shareholder of Ecomoda, the company where Betty works, and above all, the father of the man she loves, Armando.
Career in Colombian television
Although his foray into television came late, debuting at the age of 42 in the telenovela La pezuña del diablo (1983), Amuchastegui built a solid career in national television.
He is widely remembered for his role as Roberto Mendoza, Armando Mendoza’s father, in the successful telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (1999-2001).
