He was the great tabla maestro who could generate unique and wonderful variety of tones from his tabla for any type of rag. Kanthe Maharaj, the famous tabla player of Banaras Gharana, was a worthy disciple of Pt. Baldev Sahay in the family tradition of Pt. Ram Sahay. One popular anecdote recalls a performance where an audience member challenged him to play a particularly complex rhythmic cycle.
Instead of dismissing the challenge, he rose to the occasion, crafting an impromptu composition that left the entire assembly in awe.
