He began writing songs as a teenager, drawing inspiration from personal experiences and the world around him. He understood the struggles faced by marginalized communities and actively sought to support various causes throughout his life. He was the youngest of ten siblings who lost their father shortly before Gabriel's birth.

He has been honored exhaustively with industry awards, including the Golden Nipper for sales in excess of two million units in 1976. In total, Gabriel's songs have been sung by a wide assortment of prominent recording artists, such as Rocío Dúrcal and Raul di Blasio.

Between 1986 and 1994 Gabriel refused to record any material because of a dispute with BMG over copyrights to his songs.

He was recognized with multiple Latin Grammy Awards, which celebrated his contributions to the music industry. You didn’t see many male artists dress outside of their gender without massive outlash from the public. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become venues for tributes, covers, and reinterpretations of his music, further solidifying his relevance in the contemporary music landscape.

He used his platform to support various causes, including education for underprivileged children and programs for the elderly. Juanga didn’t want his music to be associated with his sexuality because he believed his art spoke for itself, which is correct. The themes of love, heartbreak, and longing found in his songs resonated with audiences across generations, making him a beloved figure in Latin music.

As he continued to develop his craft, Juan Gabriel's unique style began to emerge, blending traditional Mexican music with contemporary influences.

Their collaboration produced several successful albums that showcased the emotional depth of his songwriting.

Another significant collaboration was with Los Bukis, a popular band led by Marco Antonio Solís. There was one particular instance in which he was interviewed by Primer Impacto’s Fernando del Rincon where the topic of his sexuality was brought up.

Gabriel, who never married, includes among his perennial programs approximately ten to 12 performances per year as benefit concerts for his favorite children's homes. The EMI album, which was completed shortly before Beltran's death, included featured vocals by Gabriel and ranchero artist Vicente Fernandez. He learned to play the guitar and piano, which would become essential tools in his songwriting process.

The Billboard Music Publishing Spotlight cited Gabriel three times for his original songs during the 1990s.

In this orphanage, he wrote his first song with his surrogate parents and teachers Micaela Alvarado and Juan Contreras. As a major music star, he has no need to control his image and avows gratification that others can benefit from his fame and share in the wealth of his popularity without his involvement.
