When I paint, I adopt the same virtue of patience in my work. Cablog is known for his layered portritures and landscapes which evoke the environment and mythologies of his native Cordilleras. Now I wish to do the same through my art.

Jef Cawaon Cablog (b.

Cablog was twice semi-finalist of the Metrobank Art Competition and has also been profiled by the US-based Quarterly Art Magazine Bluecanvas. He envisions his work as a time reference to record the transition of conventional to the modern art using traditional medium. Although he sought an artist’s education within a modern institution, he promptly quit school when he felt that his instruction has begun to alter his traditional vision.

My ancestors painstakingly crafted a grand cultural monument. His highly-textured oeuvre lends an intensely-spiritual aura that is evocative of nature. Unlike most artists who strive to change the current, Jef look upon his elders to try to see a window to his people’s past.

Jef, an artist steadily gaining recognition in the Cordillera and national art scene, has always done his artistic creation in the mountains of Barlig and Baguio where he gets his inspirations.

Biography

Jefferson "JEF" Cablog (b.1981) is an indigenous artist from Barlig , Mt. Province, Philippines who believes in charting his future as a painter by looking to his past. The resulting effect is a complex interlude of colors and textures that serve to highlight his chosen subject matter. This mastery of fragmented light brings to mind another influence—that of Vienna Secessionist Gustav Klimt.

His composition and lightings are earthy and low lighted to express his dreamy and imaginative world free from the hectic routines of the modern world. Cablog work is highly reminiscent of National Artist Vincente Manansala, whom he considers a major influence. He envisions his work as a time reference to record the transition of conventional to the modern art using traditional medium.

The resulting effect is an indigenous rendering that echoes the National Artist’s development of “transparent cubism” that is, at the same time, highly detailed and exemplifies a mature drafting ability. Indeed, Cablog’s compositional sensibilities are subtlety that of Klimt, albeit filtered through the intensely regional orientations of his subjects.

Having been a full-time artist for over ten years, Cablog and his practice are deeply entrenched in the Baguio art community.

When I paint, I adopt the same virtue of patience in my work. Galerie Francesca hosted his first solo show in 2012, and he has since exhibited around the country and in Hong Kong.

Already well-known in within the Baguio-based art community, Cablog’s alluring imagery evokes the strong story-telling customs of the Cordilleras, a region celebrated for its unique and vibrant cultural traditions.

Majority of his subjects shown are indigenous and mythical passed along by old folks of his community.

His works are recently valued and perceived by writers, researchers, critics, advocates and collectors as priceless mementos of their experience and interaction with the community of the Cordilleras.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
I have listened to the countless stories of Barlig, Mountain Province,my hometown, as narrated by our village elders; and now I struggle to preserve these through my works and I know I will have to devote my entire life to this task.

I paint as my ancestors have built the rice terraces—stone by stone, piece by piece.

Jef, an artist steadily gaining recognition in the Cordillera and national art scene, draws inspiration and energy from the mountains of his hometown. His composition and lightings are earthy and low lighted to express his dreamy and imaginative world free from the hectic routines of the modern world. The narrative structure of Cablog’s works plays with his aesthetic technique that involves his use of layers and light.

Art patrons always notice how Jef’s paintings are able to show aspects of Ifialig culture in non-literal form, making them unique and distinctive.

His current works are realistic and expressionist.
