Jean-Philippe Le Guellec made history on December 1, 2012 when he won gold at the season-opening World Cup stop in Oestersund, Sweden.

That wrecked his preparation for the 2010-11 season, which was considered a writeoff. He also posted best-ever Olympic results by a Canadian male biathlete in the 20km individual (13^th) and 12.5km pursuit (11^th) as well as being the first Canadian to ever qualify for the 15km mass start race in Olympic competition. At Sochi 2014, the entire Canadian biathlon team produced numerous best-ever results, led by Le Guellec’s fifth place finish in the 10km sprint.

Le Guellec’s trip to the podium was the culmination of a comeback two years in the making after he was struck by mononucleosis in the summer of 2010.

Le Guellec shot clean in the 10km sprint, en route to becoming the first Canadian man to win a World Cup biathlon medal.

It was the breakthrough that had been hoped for since his incredible performance at Vancouver 2010 where he finished sixth in the 10km sprint for the then-top Olympic result ever by a male Canadian biathlete.

Ultimately, Leguellec finished 18.1 seconds ahead of the second-place French biathlete, Alexis Bœuf.

Jean-Philippe Le Guellec (born 31 July 1985) is a former Canadian biathlete.

Le Guellec began competing in the biathlon in 1999, and joined the national team in 2003.

Although he didn't achieve remarkable results, finishing 48th in the 20-kilometer individual race, the experience was valuable for him as he gained insight into his abilities and learned important lessons for the 2010 Olympics.

Leguellec's breakthrough came in the 2008-2009 season when he set a personal record in the Biathlon World Cup, finishing 32nd overall.

On February 14, 2010, he achieved 6th place in the men's sprint, setting a new personal record in this discipline and in biathlon as a whole.

On December 1, 2012, Leguellec celebrated his first victory in a World Cup race in Östersund, Sweden. He initially struggled in the sport, consistently finishing in lower positions. His top finish in the Biathlon World Championships also came in Antholz-Anterselva, a 40th place in the 2007 individual race.

Le Guellec competed in two events at the 2006 Olympics in Turin.

He excelled in both shooting stages, while his main competitors struggled with accuracy. Le Guellec finished career-best 10^th in the 20km individual event while the 4 x 7.5km relay team finished a best-ever eighth.

Biography of Jean-Philippe Leguellec

Jean-Philippe Leguellec is a Canadian athlete and biathlete.

He had significant success at the Junior World Championships, winning two medals in youth races at Haute Maurienne in 2004, and a bronze medal as a junior two years later in Presque Isle.

His best career season on the Biathlon World Cup circuit came in 2008/09, when he finished 32nd in the overall standings. This included his first two top 10 WC finishes, an 8th in the Hochfilzen pursuit and a 7th in the Antholz-Anterselva pursuit.

However, his situation gradually improved, and in recent competitions, Leguellec has shown impressive results.

Leguellec began his professional biathlon career in 1999 and quickly earned a place on the national team in 2003. The unexpected win surprised Leguellec himself, as he hadn't anticipated such success. His inclusion in the team was well-deserved, as he had achieved remarkable results in junior championships, winning medals in youth races in Haute Maurienne and earning a bronze medal in Presque Isle.

In 2006, Leguellec competed in the Olympic Games in Turin.

After an inconsistent 2011-12 season, he was able to do a full training load in the summer of 2012.

That helped him lead the Canadian men’s biathlon team to its most successful world championships ever in 2013.
