After winning several of the leading international voice competitions, she perfected her technique at the La Scala Academy of Lyric Opera, where she studied under Leyla Gencer, among others. In 2007 she made her role début there as Violetta, with Loren Maazels conducting.

After winning several of the leading international voice competitions, she perfected her technique at the La Scala Academy of Lyric Opera, where she studied under Leyla Gencer, among others. Irina Lungu has worked with some of the most famous conductors and directors of our time – for example, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Daniele Gatti, Michel Plasson, Daniel Oren, Gianandrea Noseda, Daniel Harding, Gustavo Dudamel and Stéphane Denève or Franco Zeffirelli, Luca Ronconi, Robert Carsen, Laurent Pelly, Pierluigi Pizzi, Deborah Warner, Eimuntas Nekrošius and Liliana Cavani.
In the 2007/08 season she starred as the main character of a new edition of Maria Stuarda and of La traviata at Teatro alla Scala, in Carmen at Sferisterio in Macerata, in La bohème during the Settimane Musicali of Stresa, and in Il corsaro at Festival Verdi in Parma.
Since then, she has appeared there in roles including Adina (»L’elisir d’amore«), Maria Stuarda, Marguerite, Oksana (Cherevichki) and the title role of »Sancta Susanna«. Irina Lungu first completed her studies in piano and choral conducting, and then studied voice. While still a student at the Academy, Lungu made her Scala début under Riccardo Muti as Anaï (»Moïse et Pharaon«).
In 2007 she made her role début there as Violetta, with Loren Maazels conducting. That was the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the soprano and the leading Italian opera company, where she has performed Adina in L'elisir d'amore, Maria Stuarda, Marguerite in Faust, Oksana in Cherevichki, Nannetta in Falstaff and the title role of Sancta Susanna.

She recently performed in La traviata in Vienna; at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin; in Wiesbaden; at the Aix-en--Provence Festival; in Dijon, Caen, and at Teatro San Carlo in Naples; with Faust and L’elisir d’amore at Teatro alla Scala, in Beijing, and in La Coruna; Carmen in Salerno; and Rigoletto in Turin.

While still a student at the Academy, Lungu made her Scala début under Riccardo Muti as Anaï (»Moïse et Pharaon«). She won several international competitions, including Operalia in 2004, the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, and Voci Verdiane in Busseto, before being accepted in 2003 by the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala, Milan, where she was mentored by, among others, soprano Leyla Gencer.
In that same year (2003) Maestro Riccardo Muti selected Lungu as Anaï in Rossini's Moïse et Pharaon, the inaugural opera of the 2003/04 season of the Teatro alla Scala.
