Freed from the constraints of FCC rules, Stern’s show took his shock jock formula into new territory.
I couldn’t adjust at all. You’d think that that kind of adulation would make you feel on top of the world. Within a year, Stern syndicated his show, allowing him to expand into markets like Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and beyond.
With a dynamic on-air team that included Quivers, producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate, writer Fred Norris, and comedian Jackie “the Jokeman” Martling, Stern became a ratings powerhouse.
By 2004, Clear Channel, the largest radio station chain in the U.S., pulled Stern’s show following an especially controversial broadcast. However, his new bosses imposed strict guidelines, which included banning jokes about personal tragedies and prohibiting slander or personal attacks unless consented to. With more than 500,000 copies in print in its first month, Private Parts proved to be the fastest-selling book in Simon & Schuster’s 70-year publishing history.
“And so I got mad and said, ‘Shut up and sit down. I felt like Tarzan when they got him out of Africa and brought him back to England.” Howard navigated his high school years by staying close with a few buddies, playing poker, and enjoying ping-pong. They later remarried on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2019, with Colton Underwood of The Bachelor officiating.
Sometimes short-fused, Ben frequently quizzed his children on current events, an open invitation to his young boy to get sarcastic when he didn’t know the answers. Eventually, it dawned on Stern that he would forever be relegated to a life of mediocrity if he continued on as a straight DJ. “So I started to mess around,” he said.
However, his debut show—featuring a controversial skit titled “Godzilla Goes to Harlem”—led to the cancellation of his program due to its racially charged content.
It was also during his time at BU that Stern met Alison Berns, his future first wife, while casting her for a student film on transcendental meditation.
And yet I don’t. Over the years, Stern has referred to a rough childhood that saw him the target of periodic school fights. “So when I asked him these serious questions, he ends up being a wise guy,” Ben Stern recalled. Stern’s interest in media can be traced back to his father, who was a part-owner of a recording studio and often recorded family events.
Still, he decided to lean into the speculation, crafting a promo that promised to clear up the allegations when his show returned this month.
