She also starred as a child actress in a Telugu movie 'Bangarakka' in 1977, and in a Malyalam movie 'Kumara Sambhavan' in 1969.

She made her foray on the Bollywood tinsel screen in 1975 as a child actor with the smash-hit 'Julie' in which she played the younger sister of the lead actress.

Sridevi’s life wasn’t without its share of controversies.

She had two stepbrothers, Anand and Satish, and a sister, Latha. She was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 by the Government of India and received this award from the President of India Pranab Mukherjee. In 2005, she judged the TV show Kaboom. During her acting career, she worked with so many popular actors like Jeetendra, Kamal Hassan, Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, etc.

Sridevi belonged to an OBC (Naidu community & Nadars) caste and was born to lawyer Ayyapan Yanger and Rajeswari Yanger.

She wanted to make sure she’s in good shape, so that on-screen, she looks good. Her subsequent roles in films like Babu (1971) and Poompatta (1971) gained her considerable recognition, even earning her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist for her performance in Poompatta. Her mother was from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

At just four years old, she made her debut in the Tamil film Thunaivan (1967). In an interview, he revealed that on her birthdays, Sridevi would walk to the Tirupati Balaji Temple in Mumbai. In 2008, she started working as a fashion model and did several modelling assignments. She appeared in 63 movies in Hindi; 62 in Telugu; 58 in Tamil; and 21 in Malyalam - in a career that has spanned from 1967 through to 2007.

Sridevi established strong onscreen pair with Kamal Hasan in Tamil films from 1977-1983 and then with Jeetendra in Hindi Films from 1983-1988 which helped her get foothold in Hindi films.

She is also on the Board of Directors of the Asian Academy of Film & Television.

Sridevi was born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan on 13 August 1963 in Meenampatti, Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, India.

Her subsequent marriage to Boney Kapoor also stirred controversy due to his pre-existing marriage to Mona Shourie Kapoor.

Death Cause

On February 24, 2018, Sridevi tragically passed away in Dubai, UAE. She accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers hotel while attending a family wedding. In 2009, she along with her husband Boney Kapoor appeared on Salman Khan‘s popular reality game show 10Ka Dum.

She worked in numerous famous films in different languages as a child artist like NamNaadu (Tamil, 1969), Maa Nanna Nirdoshi (Telugu, 1970), Badi Panthulu (Telugu, 1972), Vasantha Maaligai (Tamil, 1972), Prarthanai (Tamil, 1973), Bhakta Kumbara (Kannada, 1974), Julie (Hindi, 1975), etc.
