Johnson died in an apartment fire on April 30, 1970, possibly a result of his having fallen asleep with a lighted cigarette. His salary, which varies based on contracts and endorsements, is approximately $500,000 per year.

In 1926, Hall established the Harlem Jubilee Singers, an eight-member choral group later known into the twenty-member Hall Johnson Negro Choir.

One writer has pointed out that, ironically, a number of Johnson’s compositions, including his 1959 operetta Fi-yer! used fire as their subject matter. He showed musical talent at an early age and studied piano with his older sister, Mary Elizabeth. He made his professional debut in 2014 but was released in 2016.

After being released, he had spells at Maidstone United and Bishop's Stortford before securing a move to Braintree Town in October 2016.

Moving to Harlem in New York City, Johnson opened a studio, teaching violin and other instruments, as well as playing violin in several groups such as the Negro String Quartet, which performed a classical European repertoire and the Southern Syncopated Orchestra, a blues and popular music group. National recognition came in March 1930, when Johnson’s choir performed under his direction (and using his arrangements) in Marc Connelly’s Green Pastures.

In 1976 he was honored by his hometown of Athens with a plaque in city hall, and in 2020 he was among the first ten musicians inducted into the Athens Music Walk of Fame. As of 2025, he continues to build upon an impressive career that started when he signed with his first club in his teenage years.

  His Hall Johnson Choir, the first professional group of its kind, enjoyed a successful concert and recording career for more than three decades in the United States and abroad. After trialling since September, Hall-Johnson signed for Grimsby Town in October 2017.

  Music Career

  In 1912, Hall married a fellow Athenian, Celeste Copening.^[3] The couple settled in Harlem, where Hall opened a music studio. Extremely active in the Hollywood film studios, in 1938 Johnson recruited local African American talent to found another ensemble, the Festival Choir of Los Angeles.

  In 1946 Johnson returned to New York, where he organized the Festival Negro Choir of New York and conducted the premiere performance of his Easter cantata, The Son of Man.

  She and his mother sang authentic black spirituals that implanted the sound and harmonies of the past culture. He attended local schools where he balanced academics with his sporting commitments. Tireless in advancing his career, Johnson also taught violin at his own studio, and in 1918 he joined Will Marion Cook’s Southern Syncopated Orchestra, which toured the country performing African American folk music, blues, syncopated songs, and standard popular tunes.
