An interview by Barbara Bochenek with Halina Birenbaum, a Holocaust survivor and the author of shocking war memoirs entitled Hope is the Last to Die which became one of the classic works dealing with the Holocaust.

And not even a cashier
gone is the cargo man
and for a million zloty
you will not get a return ticket

And nobody waits for you in the station
and nobody waves a handkerchief towards you
only silence hung there in the air
to welcome you in the blind wilderness.

And silent are the three fir trees
and silent is the black board
because here is the small station of Treblinka...

This honor is given for merits in the field of Polish-Jewish dialogue.

My life began from its end –
first I did learn what death was
And later – giving birth

I was grown amid hatred
in a kingdom of destruction,
only later did I learn
What creating meant.

I was breathing darkness, fires,
withering emotions –
such was the realm of my childhood,
only later could I see
light,
only later could I see
blossoming.

I knew love always existed
Even while life was worse than horrible!
Even in the living hell it did survive –
I met with love even there.

My life began from its end
And later it returned to the beginning.
I have been raised from the dead.

It all was not in vain, not in vain,
since Good is no less mighty
than Evil.

The force of Good is in me too!
– I am the proof.

Halina Birenbaum

Halina Birenbaum (Warsaw, 15 September 1929) is a Holocaust survivor, writer, poet, translator and activist.

Born in Warsaw, Birenbaum spent her childhood in the Warsaw Ghetto and later on in German concentration camps: Majdanek, Auschwitz (Oświęcim), Ravensbrück and Neustadt-Glewe, from which she was liberated in 1945.

She was also a prisoner of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
She survived, though almost all of her family had died. לאחר שבועיים קראו את המספרים שסומנו בשעה ששרר עוצר במחנה. 09. הם יחד מהימים בעיירות הולדתם בחיק בני משפחתם הרבים האוהבים בוולה אוקשייסקה וסטאנין Stanin– עד לגטו בז'לחוב (Żelechów) , הגירוש, ימים של צייד יהודים כדי לשלחם למחנות המוות או לרוצחם במקום; בריחות מסוכנות, חיפושי הצלה אצל כפריים פולנים אמיצים, אצילי נפש שהושיטו יד במצבים שעל סף המוות; נדודים מפרכים בכפרים וביערות פולין, לחימה בשורות הפרטיזנים ולחימה בלתי מתפשרת על החיים, מבלי לאבד את הערכים האנושיים.

ראיתי לפני בבירור את כל תמונות העבר, כאילו החזקתי אותן בידי.
At home in the Ghetto everybody was scared
That my fate will be the worse, destined to die the first...
Maybe they were right -
In many ways I remained there with them
Surly I didn't get to be a child.
I passed generations in a terrible run...
Got mixed there with the livings and the Dead.
Me the little one, the unwieldy of the family - succeed to live today
Deserve to be a part of Her, to cherish Her
To pass Her image, to pronounce Her name
To penetrate Her memory in the others.
My Brother could be a father today, a grandfather.
My kids could have an uncle...
They never saw the faces of their kinsmen!
But they are alive and know from what they were born and grew - they will remember.
