He obtained a double first; in BA Honors and MA from the University of Dhaka before gong to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained his D.Phil. From 1979 to 1981 he taught History at Balliol College, Oxford. He was MacArthur Scholar and Fellow in Politics and International Relations at Nuffield College, Oxford from 1988 to 1994.

In 1972 he went to Trinity College, Oxford as a Rhodes scholar and garnered a D.Phil. In 1995 he joined the Ford Foundation as the deputy director for governance and civil society .     Rizvi is married to Agnese Barolo.

    As a teacher adn educationist he has deep interest in quality education and research.

    Gowher Rizvi was boarn in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh. From 1994 to 1995 Professor Rizvi served as the Director of Contemporary Affairs at the Asia Society in New York. His publications include. They have one daughter, Maya, who is a post-graduate student at Oxford: and they live in Dhaka.

    Many of the new institutions set up by the Foundation were aimed at the empowerment of these groups. Gowher Rizvi is a Bangladeshi historian, scholar and academic. He is the founder editor of Contemorary South Asia.

    Three themes run through all endeavors: a concern for social justice, a keen interest in institution building and a deep commitment ot quality higher education, in the two decade he has been involved in the setting up of a large number of new foundation, institutions and capacity building programs.

    Earlier he was the director of the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance & innovation at the Jhon F. school of Government, Harvard University. From 2002 to 2008 he was a lecturer of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. In 2008 he was appointed vice provost for international programs at the University of Virginia.

    In 2009 he has become the International Affairs adviser to Sheikh Hasina Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

    He has both taught and written on range of subjects and has considerable hands-on experience in institutional management, international development and conflict resolution.

    He and his family are vegetarian and volunteer for animal welfare organizations.
