She was wearing a new dress and looked at least ten years younger. I also feel overwhelmed in light of the inspiring and educational talks that we have heard this morning, and my heart is still filled with the words from the mouths of our beloved leaders at general conference last weekend.

For the entire Christian world, celebrating Easter means celebrating the victory of Jesus with His crowning triumph of life over death and His message of the “good news” and the Redemption of mankind.

The vision of a fight in me to get to the acceptable level was so much without hope that I did not even start.

I was blessed with missionaries who had patience with me. As we visited her on a regular basis, she complained over and over about her husband. Only by achieving true honesty would I be capable of receiving the courage and the self-assurance I had always felt I was missing.

Learning and understanding go hand in hand with experiencing opposition. Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook (Provo, UT: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, 1980), 77.

Truth Is the Issue

In the Doctrine and Covenants, section 1, verse 4, we read, “And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days.”

This message of warning reminds us that we human beings are spiritual children of a Father in Heaven, who is the author and finisher of all truth, and that we are lost in this earthly, fallen state unless we allow the Light of Christ, or the Spirit of truth, to become our constant and infinite guide.

In the message of the Restoration, we learn that during our mortal life our agency is tested through the inseparable connection of our spirit with the elements of this earth—“the flesh,” or the “natural man” (see D&C 88:15).

We knew that before we came to this earth, and we can sense it again, when through the Light of Christ our minds are quickened with understanding (see D&C 88:11).

The issue is truth, my dear brothers and sisters, and the only way to find truth is through uncompromising self-education toward self-honesty to see the original “real me,” the child of God in its innocence and potential, in contrast to the influence from the other part of me, the “flesh,” with its selfish desires and foolishness.

One day, a pair of missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knocked on his door.

Two years later, he was baptized a member of the church. It is obviously not the love that the publicans had. He just laughed and said with an enthusiastic voice, “That is what everyone says before he is baptized.”

I could do nothing else but ask him, “What makes you so sure?”

He looked at me with a big grin on his face and said with strong conviction, “Because you are an honest man.”

The thought struck me: “Me, an honest man?” In that moment, the Holy Ghost became my teacher, and spiritual lightning of tremendous power pierced my soul, enlightening every cell of my body.

Finally, he asked if I could forgive him and whether I would assist him with his commitment not to drink again so he could become the man I had married.

She said they embraced, both tearful and overcome by joy. But without a keen knowledge of the plan of salvation, and without the influence of the divine Light of Christ to bring us awareness, we are fighting this war subconsciously, and therefore its battlefronts are not even known to us, and we have no chance to win.

The veil will be parted, and we will know that everything will be fine. We have always known it, but we never dared to think in that direction. And as we follow His suggestions, we will be filled with joy and energy and ever more confidence.

The Influence of the Spirit

In the beginning years of my membership, I was a member of a tiny branch of the Church.

After the war, he became disillusioned with those who claimed to have answers to life’s problems. By this revelation we not only understand the cause of mankind’s misery, but we also receive the keys and power that enable us to end this misery once and for all. This confusing behavior left Elder Busche confused and disappointed.

Eventually, he married his childhood friend Jutta.

It is the prophet Moroni who points out that “because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost, which Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love” (Moro. Honesty may not be everything, but everything is nothing without honesty. Yesterday he bought her a new dress and other things that he felt she needed. The missionary who finally baptized me was not shocked by my pride and arrogance, my constant nay-saying.
