While living in the United States, Eshete became involved in the Civil rights movement and briefly worked with the Black Panther Party,[2]which he says he and other students learnt from to organise the students' movement in Ethiopia.

Esheté returned to Ethiopia from the US in the early 1990s.[12]

    From his childhood, Esheté has been a close friend of the family of Richard Pankhurst, and his mother, former Suffragette, Sylvia Pankhurst.[11] Professor Andreas has also collaborated with Richard Pankhurst on several works.
