After Donald Trump was elected U.S. president in 2016, Musk found himself on common ground with the incoming commander-in-chief and his advisers as Trump announced plans to pursue massive infrastructure developments.

He previously worked as a reporter and copy editor for a daily newspaper recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors. Musk personally bragged aboutfeeding the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the world’s largest single provider of humanitarian aid, “into the woodchipper”.

A large portion of Musk’s wealth stems from his shares and options in Tesla, which the Washington Post reported to be around $120 billion as of June 2024. The Model 3 was delayed three times before arriving to market in early 2019, and its production problems ultimately prompted Musk to personally oversee engineering efforts at Tesla.

Yet he quickly put himself back in the spotlight with his public battlewith Trump on social media and vowed he would start a third political party called the “America party,” a promise that has yet to come to meaningful fruition.

Musk’s political leanings continued to drift rightward, allying himself via near-constant posts on X interacting with far-right activists such as Tommy Robinson and telling Joe Rogan that “it should be OK to have white pride”.

The newly formed bureau operated first as a loose collection of appointed staffers and then subsumed the US Digital Service. In late October 2017, Musk posted the first photo of his company’s progress to his Instagram page. During his brief remarks, he made a straight-arm salute that caused controversy as some people likened it to the Nazi salute.

The president quickly appointed Musk to lead a temporary organization called the Department of Government Efficiency that works to cut unnecessary federal spending and modernize technology within the federal government.

Since then, she has had two more children with Musk.
