Elisabeth de Mariaffi - Inkpod Summer Series 2024

Hosted by Author Jay McGrath, the second episode of Inkpod Podcast features Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards Fiction Prize Winner Elisabeth De Mariaffi.

Both books were shortlisted for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.

That's the exciting thing about those focused years. Elisabeth now makes her home in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where she lives with the poet George Murray, their combined four children and a border collie—making them CanLit’s answer to the Brady Brunch.

Elisabeth de Mariaffi is the critically acclaimed author of four books: the Scotiabank Giller Prize-nominated short story collection How to Get Along with Women (2012), the literary thriller The Devil You Know (2015), and the 1950s-era Hitchcock-style thriller, Hysteria (2018), both of which were named Globe and Mail Best Books of the year, and shortlisted for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Prize.

I walked out of the program with a new society of friends and colleagues, many of whom are my all-time favourite people to this day. We cover it all!

While I initially signed up to take a creative non-fiction course in my second semester, on the strong recommendation of a new friend (and on a bit of a whim, let's face it) I switched over to Michael Winter's short fiction workshop at the last minute. Thanks! Updated monthly.

Her poetry and short fiction have been widely published in magazines across Canada.

Between that workshop and a summer mentorship, I put together half a manuscript's worth of short stories and sent them out for publication while I got down to the business of writing my poetry thesis. I'm back at work now as a writer again, tiptoeing into a new novel. I applied and was admitted as a poet. I tell you this because now, in 2015, I sometimes wonder if I'll ever write another poem.

Her first novel, The Devil You Know, was named one of the Best Books of 2015 by the Globe and Mail and the National Post. The Globe and Mail also chose her most recent novel, Hysteria, as one of the Best Books of 2018. Part of the beauty of a two-year program is how it forces you to expand outside of what you know.

It feels like a mess until pretty much five minutes before you're done with it.
