Biography of Rick Allen

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Rick Allen was born on November 1, 1963, in Dronfield, United Kingdom.

He not only recovered physically and emotionally but also continued his musical career with Def Leppard. While on the way to a New Year's Eve party, he was involved in a severe car accident. Rick lost an arm, but turned personal tragedy into spiritual transformation and continued his musical career. He continues to tour world wide and inspire millions with his passion for music.

Rick Allen became the drummer for Def Leppard at age 15.

Rick was born in Derbyshire, England and began drumming in his parents house as a toddler using a biscuit tin.
His first drum kit was bought for £60 at age 11 and he played with local bands.
He met the other members of Def Leppard and joined the band in November 1978.
Having seen an article called 'Leopard Loses Skins' in a local newspaper.

"I was so fortunate I was one of those kids, I came straight out of school.

From an early age, Rick had a passion for music, particularly the drums. Since then Rick has been reaching out and giving support to others all over the globe by sharing his personal experiences and his love of drumming.

Over the past 20 years Rick has reached out to teenage cancer patients, children with special needs, at risk youth in crisis, families of domestic violence and veterans who have served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was awarded the Humanitarian Award by Maria Shriver’s Best Buddies of CA in 2002 and in 2012, was also awarded the prestigious Wounded Warrior Project’s Carry It Forward Award.

It was during this time that he began his career with the band Def Leppard. He has a daughter from his previous marriage.

Car Accident

Rick lost his left arm in a car crash on 31st December 1984 while driving back to Sheffield on the A57 road.
He recovered, re-learnt to play drums using an electronic kit and continues to play for the band to this day.

"At first it was, when I finally came round, it was terrible and it was horrible.

No formal training, nothing like that. One of these shows took place at Hammersmith Odeon, where Allen and his bandmates performed in celebration of Rick's sixteenth birthday. From that moment on, Rick Allen and his bandmates embarked on extensive touring, starting in their home country and eventually expanding to international tours.

Tragic Accident and Comeback

On December 31, 1984, a tragic event occurred in Rick's life.

The accident resulted in significant injuries, and Rick's left arm had to be amputated due to a subsequent blood infection. And that kind of reignited my passion for painting again."

Biography

Rick Allen became the drummer for Def Leppard at age 15. Around the same time, the band started performing their first concerts.

His parents bought him a high-quality drum set, and Rick promised to repay them half of the cost once he reached a certain level of proficiency. Since then he has shared many more collections and hosted various artwork exhibitions/Meet And Greets at Wentworth Galleries across the USA.
In 2018 he unveiled his 'Legends Series' which includes portraits of departed musical icons.
