Lincoln’s Cabinet

Following his election to the presidency in 1860, Lincoln selected a strong cabinet composed of many of his political rivals, including William Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Edwin Stanton. Officials removed the coffin from the train to lie in state at ten locations along the trip.

Lincoln was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, near Springfield, Illinois, on May 4, 1865.

But by 1864, the Confederate armies had eluded major defeat and Lincoln was convinced he’d be a one-term president. Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Less than two years after being uprooted, Lincoln’s mother died on October 5, 1818.

It was through working with the public that Lincoln acquired social skills and honed a storytelling talent that made him popular with the locals. In 10 cities, the casket was removed and placed in public for memorial services. Lincolnexplained in his secondinaugural address: "Both partiesdeprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the Nation survive, and the otherwouldaccept war rather than let it perish, and the war came."
