He has brought a new vitality to one of the earliest forms of printmaking and is regarded as one of the finest wood engravers working today.

Later compositions, particularly those from an underwater viewpoint, use an increasingly abstract and fluid line to capture the fast and fleeting movement of birds and fish.

Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers.

Colin studied at the Northampton School of Art and is regarded as one of the finest wood engravers working today. In his latest book, Air and Water, Colin creates compositions of great complexity, leading the eye through air and water, capturing the fast and fleeting movements of birds and fish at the same time.

His influences might be said to derive from Japanese prints and also the work of  artists such as Thomas Bewick, Charles Tunnicliffe, Agnes Miller Parker and Gertrude Hermes.

Colins' work is based on the meticulous observation of the natural world. He has gained international recognition and his engravings are held in many major collections.

He exhibits widely in group and solo shows and is a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The latest, 'Of a Feather - an Avian Alphabet' published in 2007 is accompanied by a touring exhibition.

'Colin See-Paynton has introduced yet another vision of this rich tradition of wood engravings of birds. His work is based on meticulous observation of the natural world and yet it has an almost abstract quality within the intricacy of the patterning and layering of images.

Later compositions, particularly those from an underwater viewpoint, use an increasingly abstract and fluid line to capture the fast and fleeting movements of birds and fish.

Colin See-Paynton is a Fellow of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers.

The book includes extracts of angling literature chosen by Keith Harwood.

Other titles by Colin See-Paynton include:
The Incisive Eye 1980
Of a Feather 2007

NB Colin's engravings are editioned: sales will not show until an edition has sold out.

Colin See-Paynton who is entirely self-taught as an engraver, began making prints in 1980 and has since produced over 150 editions.

He is a keen angler and bird watcher, and as a child he spent much of his time on the banks of the Great Ouse fishing for chub, pike and silvery dace. He is widely regarded as the leading exponent of wood engraving in the United Kingdom and his work is represented in many private and public collections around the world including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Museum of Modern Art, Wales; Yosemite Wildlife Museum and the Guangdong Museum of Art, China.

Colin See-Paynton had his first sell out exhibition with us in February 2017, followed by exhibitions in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 & 2024.  Colin will return for a major retorspective exhibition, and book launch, in July 2026.

In 1972, Colin See-Paynton moved to a remote farmhouse in Wales, on to which he built his studio.

He creates compositions of great complexity and refinement and has evolved something new by the patterning and layering of his images. Entirely self-taught as an engraver, he began to make prints in 1980 and has since produced over 250 editions.

Colin has brought a new vitality to one of the earliest forms of printmaking.

His delight in the lines of a bird so elegantly inscribed by the cut of his graver, his skill in varying texture even though he only has black and white with which to do so, his palpable pleasure in composing his subjects into joyous designs have brought something new to the portrayal of birds.' - Sir David Attenborough
