A better alternative would be one of these “plastic fish” aquariums, which basically achieves the same goal: it gives your cat something to do with their mind, as they remain passively engaged in their hunter way without actually having to hunt.
A final idea to consider in our catification efforts here is…
The Catio
As you probably know by now, I’m not a big proponent of cats going indoors and outdoors at will.
He is a feline behavior consultant, musician, author (BOOKS page) and host of the TV program, My Cat From Hell. Jackson’s mission is to educate people about cats and deepen the human and cat bond, while reducing the number of animals that end up in shelters.
Litter boxes should never be placed near appliances and kitty should have a clear view of its surroundings while in the box (to be sure all is safe while eliminating). Mr. Walker is incredibly creative, uses bright, fun colors and has truly given us much to consider regarding catification!
Jackson has years of experience in cat behavior counseling and is called upon time and time again to help people on the brink of making serious decisions regarding their cats.
There, you can offer great vertical spaces, wooden objects that they can scratch on, different grasses including catnip that you can plant and they can enjoy—even hunting that can happen when critters make their way inside. A catio is a space you can make for cats (which of course you can share with them) by enclosing your existing patio or creating an enclosure.
Kitty needs some privacy, but areas that no one utilizes can be scary. Now they have space they can claim as their own. As stresses build for kitty, kitty can eventually shut down and problems occur.

About Me & Our Company
Popularly known as “The Cat Daddy” or Chief Cat Advocate/Investor of Sustainably Yours, Jackson Galaxy is the host and executive producer of Animal Planet's long running hit show “My Cat From Hell.” Jackson, an animal advocate and cat behavior and wellness expert, is also a two-time New York Times best-selling author with more than 25 years of experience working with cats and their guardians.
You can use cat shelves, your own furniture, odds-and-ends you might find in your garage (a nice trunk, wine crate, etc.). Covered litter boxes are highly discouraged.
Solid, somewhat heavy scratchers are essential for cat health, and to keep kitty from scratching furniture, wood trim and carpet. When they have spaces to leave their scent, this reinforces the feeling of “this space is mine,” which fosters a feeling of confidence, security, and comfort.
Areas to climb and jump. Outdoor cats love to race-up trees so if you don’t want them climbing on your furniture, you have to give them other places to do so.
Catifying Your Home For Harmony
Catification is the art of creating an enriched home environment that is acceptable to both you and your cat. This will further add to kitty's enrichment!
Mental and physical enrichment encompass scratchers, vertical spaces, interactive and singular play and food puzzles/hunts.
Placing these or other resting areas near windows will allow kitty to view nature outside. (I realize this is not an especially popular idea to most humans, but I wouldn’t ask this of you if I didn’t think it was absolutely paramount.)
Once we have some of these “base camp” signposts in place, our next step in catifying your home for harmony is checking out a little mind-stimulating entertainment for your cat in the form of…
Cat TV
Did you know that cats spend an inordinate part of the day not sleeping (as is typically presumed), but looking out the window?
Cat TV takes the most important story line for cats—hunting—and puts it in a “box,” so that they can experience the same relaxed sensation: an exercise I call “passive engagement.”
Just as you might design your living room with the TV as the focal point, look around your home for prime windows for creating Cat TV, and add things outside those windows to attract natural prey such as birds and insects.
Leaving dry food in a bowl is BORING!! As predators, cats prefer that their water sources are separated from their food sources.
