    Hepburn's collaboration with fellow screen legend Spencer Tracy added immense depth to her career. By 1938, Hepburn was a bona fide star, and her foray into comedy with the films Bringing Up Baby and Stage Door was well received critically.

    Yearning for a comeback on the stage, Hepburn returned to her roots on Broadway, appearing in The Philadelphia Story, a play written especially for her by Philip Barry. She was married once, to businessman Ludlow Ogden Smith in 1928, but their union ended in divorce in 1934.

    Hepburn is perhaps best remembered for her role in The African Queen (1951), for which she received her fifth Best Actress nomination. Having satisfied RKO, Hepburn went immediately back to Manhattan to begin the play, in which she played an English girl unhappy with her overbearing mother and wimpy father.

    Instead, she focused on her career and her artistic expressions, redefining the parameters of success for women in her era.
