About the Author: Terry DeRoy Gruber

Photographer and founder of Gruber Photographers Inc, Terry deRoy Gruber was born in Pittsburgh, PA.

Inspired by his mother, internationally acclaimed artist, Aaronel deRoy Gruber, Terry began his life passion of taking pictures at age eight; this led to a BA in film from Vassar College where he honed his skills as a photo-documentarian culminating the 1975 Vassar College Yearbook, featured in the NY Times, Esquire, and People Magazine for his unique photographic approach.

Upon graduating, Terry moved to NYC and began his career as an assistant to legendary fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo.

Two other cat books, Fat Cats and Cat High: The Yearbook, were later published both to great success, the latter selling over 250,000 copies. In 1997, Fox Television produced a pilot on the wedding photography profession titled “The Wedding Album,” using Terry’s body of work throughout. Gruber Studios is the only studio in the United States offering this antique service.

The drama club performed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Terry changed the way people think about "cat pictures".

He later attended Columbia Film School where he received an MFA in Screenwriting and Directing. By far, his favorite exhibit was “The Honeymoon Series” at the Silver Eye Wood Street Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA, a show with his mother Aaronel deRoy Gruber.

Media has followed Terry’s career.

Later, Terry landed deal to write, Working Cats a book where he took candid portraits of cats that lived in places of business in the Tri-State area. And, of course, Sophie McMeow was voted "Most Chased." Filled with cat class photos, candid shots, and handwritten notes to the yearbook's owner, Nelson "Gill" Fish, Cat High revives the classic parody yearbook in all its black-and-white, feline-filled glory.

About

Cat High: The Yearbook

This hilarious parody yearbook explores the ups and downs of a year in the life of the senior class cats at Paw Paw High School.

While Scavullo shot covers for Cosmopolitan and fashion stories for Vogue, Gruber countered by shooting portraits of survivalist cats adopted by shops and businesses.

His philosophy of emphasizing the candid moments to tell a story, won him several fans in the New York event industry. The Ratters football coach, Fred Ball Whiskers, retired. When wedding planners saw his innovative work, his handling of light, and his specialized use of flash, the demand for his work grew exponentially.

Photography covering the nuptials of many high-profile clientele followed: Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas, Melissa Rivers, Billy Joel, Padma Lakshmi, Salman Rushdie, Geraldo Rivera, Julia Roberts, Tom Collichio, Usher, and Alec Baldwin… Celebrity wedding advisers such as Marcy Blum and Maria McBride–Mellinger have relied upon Terry’s photography and knowledge when publishing their books.

Furthermore, his work is regularly featured in the likes of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Martha Stewart Living, People Magazine, Brides Magazine, Glamour, New York Magazine and Photo District News to name a few.

Most recently, in January 2014 Terry’s expert opinion was called upon to comment on the style of celebrity photographers’ “Inez and Vinoodh”, causing some controversy among fans.

Terry Gruber is a photographer who is best known for his ground breaking photography of cats and starting a new brand of wedding photography which has become known as wedding photojournalism.

In 2001 the New York Times highlighted Terry’s avant-garde approach to candid wedding photography in a survey about trends. In 2005 Terry was honored with the Modern Bride Trendsetter Award. He was born the son of acclaimed artist Aaronel deRoy Gruber. Considered the William Wegman of cats, Terry has published three books: “Working Cats,” “Fat Cats,” and the wildly successful parody, “Cat High: The Yearbook” selling over 400,000 copies worldwide.

After receiving an MFA in screenwriting and directing at Columbia University, his short comedy, “Not Just Any Flower,” tutored under Martin Scorsese, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and various international film festivals, garnering several awards.

Interestingly, Terry’s thirty-year career as a wedding and event photographer began more by accident than design.

His works are included numerous collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Getty Museum, the Erie Museum, and the L.B. Foster Collection, and have been exhibited at The Camera Club of New York, Christie’s, Felissimo Gallery, G. Ray Hawkins Gallery, ICP, Japan’s Mitsubishi Gallery, The Kent Gallery, Nikon House, Hudson Yards, and the Bergdorf Goodman Bridal Salon.
