  • Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World. Between 2011 and 2014, she served as a faculty member at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

    Her photographic work specializes in portrait photography and nudes, while her academic research focuses on Dutch and Scottish seventeenth- and early-eighteenth century portraiture.

    Her photos have appeared in many publications including eight monographs Carla also works for magazines and publishers including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and Random House. In 2020, she had a retrospective show at the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg.

    Carla van de Puttelaar (born 1 November 1967) is a Dutchfine art photographer and art historian based in Amsterdam.

    Biography

    Van de Puttelaar was born in Zaandam, the Netherlands.

    Amongst those who also were so kind as to participate in this project are President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly, CEPS expert Tinatin Akhvlediani and Abir Al-Sahlani, Member of the European Parliament for the Swedish Center Party.

    Carla holds a Ph.D.

    While she initially worked with film, she has transitioned to digital photography. She also published various essays on Dutch portraiture of the seventeenth century in Oud Holland and various other magazines and books. Tekst/text Rudy Kousbroek (2004)

  • Galateas. The exhibition featured 78 works spanning 22 years and was accompanied by a catalog with an introduction by art historian Rudi Ekkart.

    Presently, she researches the work of the painter John Michael Wright in order to publish a monograph and catalogue raisonné.

    Her photographic work has gained worldwide recognition, and she has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world.

  • Scottish Portraiture 1644-1714, David and John Scougall and Their Contemporaries. She was awarded the Esther Kroon Prize, and in 2002 the Prix de Rome Basic Prize. In 2016, she created The Rembrandt Series in collaboration with the Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam, and in 2017 she started the (ongoing) acclaimed portrait series Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World.

    A book based on her dissertation appeared in 2021 with Brepols Publishers. Many of her photographs are untitled, enhancing a sense of distance and mystery while subtly conveying intimacy and sensuality.

    Recognition

    Van de Puttelaar has received several awards, including the Dutch Prix de Rome Basic Prize. She authored ‘Scottish Portraiture 1644-1714’, published by Brepols in December 2021.

    In 2017, van de Puttelaar initiated the portrait project Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World, which comprises over 550 portraits of women engaged in various art disciplines as museum curators and directors, to art collectors and artists.

    Van de Puttelaar's work has been widely exhibited, including a retrospective exhibition titled ‘Brushed by Light’ at the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg in 2020.

    Van de Puttelaar’s photography is often compared to that of Rineke Dijkstra and Hellen van Meene due to its resemblance to Dutch Golden Age paintings in terms of composition, light, and texture.

      • 2022-presentProminent and Promising Women in the EU, BrusselsIn 2022 Carla van de Puttelaar started the portrait project Prominent and Promising Women in the EU in cooperation with the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU*.

      The series aims to visualize the state of women's representation in the EU. It is intending to inspire and invite discussion on gender equality and inclusion in the EU and beyond. With an introduction by Kristien Hemmerechts (2008)

    • Adornments. The first exhibition of this project consisting of fourteen portraits, organized by the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU opened on 8 March 2023 at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Belgium in Brussels in presence of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, whose portrait is included in the series and the Netherlands Minister for Digitalisation Alexandra van Huffelen.
