    Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, he appeared in feature films such as Sweet Lorraine (1987) and Ransom (1996), sharing an Awards Circuit Community Award nomination for Best Cast Ensemble for Ransom.

    On television, he took on guest and recurring roles in series including Miami Vice, Law & Order, and Six Feet Under, but his breakthrough came in 2002 when he was cast as Harry Goldenblatt on Sex and the City.

    His most recent book, IT’S ONLY TEMPORARY: THE GOOD NEWS AND THE BAD NEWS OF BEING ALIVE, describes the years since the illness, and the surprisingly long and complex journey toward long-delayed gratitude. Off-Broadway, Evan appeared in two Donald Margulies world premieres, “Found a Peanut” (NYSF/Public Theater), and “What’s Wrong with this Picture?” (Manhattan Theater Club); “SLAM” in EST’s Marathon ’84; and Jacquelyn Reingold’s “String Fever,” also at EST.

    In addition to his acting appearances, Evan is the author of two books.

    In 1979, he enrolled in the Juilliard School’s Drama Division (Group 12) but left the four-year program in 1981—after two years—when he was cast in the film Taps.

    Handler married Italian-born chemist Elisa Atti in 2003 after a courtship not publicly documented; they have one daughter together, Sofia Clementina Handler (born January 17, 2007).
