In an artistic career spanning four decades, Joni Mitchell inspired the 1960s baby-boomers, created a soundtrack for the Woodstock generation and received critical acclaim for a succession of ground-breaking albums including "Clouds", "Blue", "Court and Spark" and "The Hissing of Summer Lawns".
Karen's previous book, Hymn to Her, a collection of writings on women musicians, was published by Virago in 1995.

Ultimately, Mitchell's fully lived life seems to sprawl past the author's grasp. She also fascinated musicians with her innovative guitar styling, using open tunings never seen before, developed to aid her polio-weakened left hand. But Joni Mitchell remains elusive in this telling. But with little visual support the impact is weak.
The open-hearted, confessional songs on Mitchell's early '70s albums remain her best-known work. Condition: Very Good. She travels to art school in Calgary, discovers singing in coffee houses, travels east; poor and uncertain, she abandons an infant daughter to adoption, then becomes Joni Mitchell in a brief, ill-advised marriage to American folksinger Chuck Mitchell.
By the late 1970s Mitchell had been largely written off by the mainstream music industry and the critics but, in the years that followed, she came to be acknowledged as a pivotal inspiration for a new generation of musicians and songwriters: women like Suzanne Vega, Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette, as well as male artists including Prince, Elvis Costello, Morrissey, Seal and Beck.

To many, Joni Mitchell was frozen in the past as blonde lady with guitar, winsome singer and master-crafter of hippy-era whimsy and heart-sore laments. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
