Bethuel Kiplagat was a former diplomat and Kenyan government official who served as the chairman of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) from 2009 to November 2010, when he resigned after coming under investigation for past human rights abuses (particularly his role in the 1984 Wagalla Massacre).

Ambassador Bethuel A. Kiplagat was the son of the late Rajab Kimagut Boin and the late Hadija Jepkirech. He passed away in July 2017.

His leadership in major national, regional, and international church organizations prepared him for a life of diplomatic service to the Kenyan government, a role he maintained in various capacities, both formal and informal, until his health deteriorated.

Kiplagat was also the founder and former executive director of Africa Peace Forum. He was reinstated as TJRC chair in 2012 despite objections from other members of the commission.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr.Ambassador Bethuel Abdu Kiplagat after a long illness bravely borne.

Ambassador Kiplagat was a devout Christian and a great patriot who played a key role in peace making in Kenya, the Horn of Africa and across the continent.

For more than half a century, he consistently promoted reconciliation, with the ecumenical movement as the frame of reference. Loving husband of Lay Cannon Honorine Kiplagat. His dedication to Kenya exemplified him as a statesman, civil servant and great friend to many.

Dr. He was instrumental in the introduction of microfinance in Kenya, the modernisation of the Nairobi Securities Exchange and played an integral role at the onset of the crafting of the 2010 Kenya Constitution.

He featured in most ecumenical initiatives for reconciliation across all of Africa. Grandfather of Kigen, Nandi and Kendi Kiplagat.

Family and friends are gathering for daily prayers and funeral arrangements from Monday 17 July at 5:30pm at St Marks Church,Waiyaki Way. The funeral service will be at St Marks Church,Waiyaki Way on Thursday, 20th July at 10:00am.

Parking will be available at the Westlands Primary School, located on School Lane.

The burial will be at his home in Mosoriot, Nandi County on Saturday, 22nd July from 10:00am.

Bethuel Abdu Kiplagat was a distinguished Kenyan diplomat, ecumenist, and mentor who served in many roles, with great impact both in Africa and abroad. Prior to that he served in then-President Daniel arap Moi’s government for 13 years (1978-1991) as Kenya's ambassador to France, high commissioner to Britain, and permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
