Sarah Bernhardt, the (great) Lady of Penhöet
Although Sarah Bernhardt initially faced the ire of the fishermen in Sauzon—her move to the Poulains had indeed deprived them of one of their favorite fishing spots—she quickly won over the hearts of the “Bellilois”…
Demonstrating great solidarity, even after returning to Paris, she never forgot her fellow islanders.
The old fort, which Bernhardt had spotted her first day on Belle-Ile, stood gray and desolate. « Planté sur le rocher dans une déclivité de terrain, un vieux fortin abandonné, noir et triste, enveloppé de l’incessant fracas de mer rugissante. While this excursion may not seem extraordinary in itself, Sarah Bernhardt’s love at first sight for the small fort at the la Pointe des Poulains defies all reason!
Not in person, of course, as she died at her home in Paris in 1923 and is buried in the city's Pere Lachaise cemetery. Laure Verron-Archimbaud died some years ago. At the foot of the breakwater stood the Hotel du Phare (Lighthouse Hotel), named after the flashing beacon at the end of the jetty.
It was on this quay, in front of the hotel, that Bernhardt and her entourage of friends and servants would disembark from the steamboat that brought them from the mainland.
"I was born in Le Palais in 1916. Somewhere, lost in my files, is an obituary in a French newspaper. From there I could see the jagged inlets and towering pinnacles of the Cote Sauvage.
A love affair with the Pointe des Poulains!
At the close of the 19th century, Belle-Île was far from an unknown or deserted island.

Cerné par l’Océan, dans un écrin de rochers sculptés par l’érosion – comme le célèbre rocher du Chien – ce fortin se dresse dans une nature qui semble indomptable…Pas pour Sarah, que rien n’effraie et que le caractère un peu sauvage du lieu séduit même complètement !
Le 11 novembre 1894, elle entre donc en possession du fortin qui sera pendant près de 30 ans son refuge estival, loin du tumulte de la vie parisienne…Quoi que !

L’arrivée du chemin de fer jusqu’à Quiberon (1882), la traversée à bord d’un vapeur de la compagnie de l’Union Belliloise, une excursion en voiture à cheval jusqu’à la côte sauvage avec ses grottes et ses paysages époustouflants, séduisent un nombre toujours plus grand de touristes !
Si cette excursion n’a donc rien d’extraordinaire en soi, le coup de foudre de Sarah Bernhardt pour le fortin de la Pointe des Poulains défie toute raison !
(…) Lavé par la pluie et l’embrun, un écriteau portait ceci : Fort à vendre. » L’actrice est enthousiaste et déclare à ses amis : « j’ai acheté ce fort, nous y viendrons passer l’été chaque année désormais ».
« C’est tout petit Belle-Isle, mais c’est sauvage et immense, parce que Belle-Isle c’est une des pointes du vieux monde, le poing de l’Europe plongé dans l’océan (…) Voilà pourquoi j’aime Belle-Isle : pour sa solitude, pour son silence, pour sa sauvagerie, pour ses pêcheurs, pour sa mer transparente et glauque, pour son ciel tantôt noir, et tantôt bleu, pour tous les spectacles splendides que la nature y organise, pour tout ce que j’y trouve de rêve, d’idéal et de beauté )».
Sarah Bernhardt : une femme dans le vent !
Difficile de résumer en quelques mots la vie de cette femme, née un jour d’octobre 1844, à Paris. Her father, Charles Archimbaud, had handled Bernhardt's business affairs on the island.
"He was the only notary on Belle-Ile at that time," said Verron-Archimbaud. Other constructions soon followed, including the Villa Lysiane (now the Maison du Littoral) and Villa Simone at the entrance to Sauzon.
