There were times when he received negative roles to play as an antagonist. A life-long believer in Marxist ideals, he held the post of the President of Federation of Film Technicians & Workers of Eastern India and Shilpi Sansad, Kolkata.
After Nagarik, Anil Chatterjee went forth doing an important role in Ghatak`s second film Ajantrik (1958), which did not have much commercial success.
A fantastic raconteur, he was also a very competent painter who created some wonderful oil-paintings in his spare time. He was also excellent as the patriotic Captain Aftab in Sandhya Dweeper Sikha (1964), a film on a group of soldiers in the backdrop of the Indo-Chinese War. In Pinaki Mukherjee’s thriller Faraar (1965), Chatterjee essayed the role of Shankar Choudhury, a rich and flamboyant naval officer who becomes a prime suspect in a complicated murder case.
In Utpalendu Chakraborty’s National Award winner Chokh (1983), he was perfect as the conscientious physician Dr Mukherjee while he also did competent jobs in Aparna Sen’s Paroma (1984) and Gautam Ghosh’s Paar (1984). Kanchenjungha is a Bengali movie which is about the vacation resort of Kanchenjunga, located near Darjeeling.
Anil Chatterjee had a rare capability of in capturing the shades of the character selfishly single-minded in his pursuit for excellence. This film, made in Hindi, had Balraj Sahni, Leela Chitnis and Helen in the leading roles.
In 1953, he got married and had three sons and one daughter. These include Louhakapat (1957), Nirjan Saikate (1963) and Jotugriha (1964).
After passing out of college, Anil Chatterjee started to work as an assistant director along with his relative, Ardhendu Mukherjee - a successful producer-director of the period. Anil got an opportunity to get portrayed in films of famous directors like Tapan Sinha, Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray, and Mrinal Sen.
With the first three directors he received more than one chance to act in their cinemas. In 1991, he made history by becoming the first non-Congress candidate to represent Kolkata`s Chowringhee Assembly constituency in the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha. He got appreciation from Basanti Devi, who is Deshbandhu's wife.
Anil Chatterjee`s career with Satyajit Ray began with the film Devi (1960), featuring Sharmila Tagore; where he had a small role. He was a Member of the Govt of India’s Cine Workers Welfare Fund. of West Bengal. With his death Bengali cinema lost one of its best actors and one of its most loved and respected human beings.
