His parents Paul and Rosalie ran a bakery in Astoria – he came from Germany, she from Scotland. His portrayal of Nick, a steelworker thrust into the horrors of the Vietnam War, earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
He remains as unpredictable and captivating as ever, and audiences continue to be drawn to his performances.
