After a 25 year career as a classical ballet dancer, Mr Antonijevic extended his love of dancing from the stage to the camera, implementing the same principles of form and space into his passion behind the lens. As viewers, we are enchanted by the chiaroscuro, the play of light and dark, the mysterious, quasi-minimalist abstract forms created by those draped figures, tensed against the drapery that enfolds them.”

Aleksandar Antonijevic has exhibited his work, at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, April 2012 and at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, June 2012.

He invites us into the most intimate places of the human anatomy and makes them a matter of pure line and contour. He presented solo exhibits at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, as well as at the David H. Koch Theatre in New York City, USA.

Aleksandar Antonijevic was born in Pozarevac, former Yugoslavia. I am a photographer of people, continually looking to capture a story only a human face and body can tell.

My sense of composition and light is strongly influenced by the old masters, especially the Dutch masters and in particular Vermeer, for his understated and gentle observation of action and incredible control of light.

His solo photography exhibit, inFORMants, part of the 2013 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, held at Berenson Fine Art, received national and international critical acclaim.

It is of utmost importance that I execute my art “beautifully”, not so much that it pleases my eye in a superficial manner, but that the excellence of the image conveys the message and the mood of the statement.

He invites us into the most intimate places of the human anatomy and makes them a matter of pure line and contour. As I work with my subjects, Rodin’s sculpture and Mapplethorpe’s nudes and portraits play a significant role in shaping my artistic voice and identity.

Through my imagery I explore tension, torque and dynamic of musculature, witness the inner conversation of a lone individual, patiently look for a true and authentic moment on subjects face and await their impact on the viewer.

In his photography, the artist captures that unquantifiable dynamic between two beings, to reveal the inner conversation of a lone model and to explore their meaning and impact on the viewer.

The artist was influenced by the form of ancient Greek monumental sculptures, the work of Auguste Rodin and his ability to model the complexity and the elegance of the human figure; and the highly stylized and provocative contemporary photography of Robert Mapplethorpe.
