Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian explorer, colonizer, and navigator. By the end of his life, Columbus faced financial ruin as much of his promised gold and treasures never materialized.
Personal Life: Married Life and Children
Christopher Columbus, originally known as Cristoforo Colombo, married Filipa Perestrelo in the late 1470s while he was residing in Lisbon, Portugal.
Towards the end of his life, he was frequently in physical pain from his journeys.
Columbus is venerated by many European Americans as the man who helped put America on the map. Tragically, Filipa passed away when Diego was still a child, which left Columbus to navigate his early fatherhood without her support. Together, they had one son, Diego, who was born around 1480.
However, Columbus was the first to travel to America and establish permanent settlements. Due to rough seas, he was forced to land in Portugal, an unfortunate event for Columbus. Over time the colonists enslaved many of the natives, sending some to Europe and using many to mine gold for the Spanish settlers in the Caribbean. A gifted navigator or reckless adventurer?

Columbus never discovered America but his voyage was no less courageous
Even if you were to overlook the not-so-minor fact that millions of people were already living in the Americas in 1492, the fact is that Columbus never set foot on the shores of North America.
Those who stood against Columbus would later use this as an argument against him. However, Europeans often had to travel through the Middle East to reach Asia.
However, Columbus faced numerous challenges during and after his expeditions. In particular, he became fascinated with Biblical prophecies and wrote his own ‘Book of Prophecies’ (1505).
Christopher became an apprentice in his father’s wool weaving business, but he also studied mapmaking and sailing as well. In his twenties, he settled in Lisbon, where he married Filipa Perestrelo and fathered a son, Diego.
