Through this he challenges and reimagines the existing landscape. Not necessarily in the same way as Olson has but alongside my work I want to research the history of the places I am painting and photographing to gain a wider and older context to my work. It explores the relationship between “tree, not-tree and the line of horizon.” Through this process he temporarily creates mountains out of the trees.
Through this he challenges and reimagines the existing landscape. His optical illusions.
The experience of a visual illusion uses the disconnect between our perception and our reality. It can also be removed much more easily and in a less damaging way.
The way Olsen has combined the trees in the foreground with the landscape in the background in a visual way has created an almost fake outline in a similar way to the sort I would create in my own work, particularly the circular collages of recent work.
Zander Olson [online]. ‘Zander Olson’. He now lives in London. There is a strong sense of place in Olsen’s work. He creates interactive art that play with the backdrop. ca.
Olsen‘s ongoing art series is called ‘Tree, Line’. And one could argue is his true medium. His photography and art installations are rooted in transforming landscapes and this is further explored in his strong interest in architecture.
Through ‘wrapping’ his trees with white material he constructs a visual relationship between tree, not-tree and the line of horizon and shows it to audience through the camera’s viewpoint.
I love how he uses the landscape and trees as part of his his photographic installations.
He uses these materials and shapes of the landscape itself to create patterns and shapes that almost interrupt that landscape.
He creates interactive art that play with the backdrop.
He then photographs his art installations.

Zander Olsen is a Welsh born artist and photographer who is most well-known for his art of wrapping trees “Tree, Line.
In which the work could not work in any other place other than the place he has chosen and he has responded to and intervened in the landscape around him. Olsen says he work is made up of “an ongoing series of constructed photographs rooted in the forest”. The trees and material are a means to an end. I am not certain if this is due to the fact that the landscape in this case is of Wales and is therefore highly similar to that of my own at home in Somerset.
