I think I’m going to take a few courses.
GWS What about the human brain interests you so much?
XNY I think the human brain, using a ballet dancer as an example … it could be just a switch of mind, whether you think you can make this ballet, or you can finish. In addition, Nan has also worked with many world-renowned choreographers.
Nan has appeared as a guest artist with the Hamburg Ballet, working closely with John Neumeier, and in Stars of the 21st Century.
Prior to this appointment, Nan served as Ballet Mistress and assisted choreographers on many ballets. You get that tiredness out, you train your strength and muscle stamina, and try your best not to show it on stage.
GWS What do you think is the biggest assumption that people have about being a ballet dancer?
XNY This is one that I often get asked.
In addition, Nan has also worked with many world-renowned choreographers.
Nan has appeared as a guest artist with the Hamburg Ballet, working closely with John Neumeier, and in Stars of the 21st Century. It just comes from how much physical work we do.
GWS How do you think your life would have been different had you not gone to a professional training school?
XNY Oh, it would be totally different.
She also performed many works by George Balanchine and created new roles in ballets by James Kudelka, Aszure Barton, Matjash Mrozewski, Jean-Pierre Perreault and Dominique Dumais.
She joined the National Ballet in 1996 and became a Principal Dancer in 2001.
With the National Ballet, she has performed lead roles in The Merry Widow, Balanchine’s Don Quixote, Four Temperaments, Swan Lake, Onegin, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Theme and Variations, The Nutcracker, Apollo, The Firebird, Song of the Earth, Opus 19/The Dreamer and Voluntaries.
Nan created the role of the Mother in James Kudelka’s The Contract (The Pied Piper), as well as roles in Matjash Mrozewski’s Monument and Wolf’s Court, Jean-Pierre Perreault’s The Comforts of Solitude and Dominique Dumais’ one hundred words for snow.
I got promoted to second soloist after I performed Swan Lake, but I was still young. Is it exhausting?
XNY You get used to it. It’s really challenging because there are a lot of jumps, and you’re on stage most of the time.
GWS And what was it like dancing with Rex Harrington?
XNY It was nerve wracking at the beginning when we first started rehearsing, because he was the biggest male star in North America.
Her radiant, standout performances as Odette in Swan Lake, the title role in Giselle, Paulina in The Winter’s Tale, Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and Tatiana in Onegin – among other leading roles – made her an audience favourite. The corps de ballet is important to the foundation of the full-length ballet.
The information is just in your phone. So, you really didn’t have much information unless you were physically in the company and talking to people who had a sense of what it was like. And I often get ‘can you eat anything you want?’ I mean, not in a bad way, but I think they’re curious. She danced with the National Ballet from 1996 to 2019, becoming Principal Dancer in 2001.
Really exhausting. In 2021, Nan joined the company’s Artistic Staff, accepting the position of Artistic Coach and in 2022, she was promoted to Rehearsal Director and Principal Coach. That’s what I’m interested in. I was only there for a year.
