Syama Prasad Mookerjee: Death and Martyrdom in Hindutva Myth-Making
An examination of the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh—predecessor to the ruling Hindutva-fascist party in India, the BJP.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee (1901-1953) was an influential politician, a major opposition leader in newly independent India, and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Without Dr. Mookerjee, there was no thread to hold the political platform NDP together. He died in the custody of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1953. He represents the voice of reason to an almost prophetic degree, especially in scenarios where he has heated debates with his antithesis, Jawaharlal Nehru. While Roy and Madhok claim that Mookerjee was taken to a small cottage where there were no medical arrangements nor any facilities for Mookerjee to occupy himself, Sham Lal Saraf, a Kashmir Health Minster at the time, claimed that Mookerjee was taken to a private bungalow known as the Heather Villa.
During September, the Karnataka unit was formed under the presidency of G. Paramasiviah, former Mysore High Court Justice. However, there was a necessity not only to protect Bharatiya social and cultural values, but also to create an alternative political & economic model. He spearheaded a political platform – the National Democratic Party (NDP) comprising parties other than the BJS such as the Akali Dal, Hindu Mahasabha, Tamilnad Toilers Party, Ganatantra Parishad, and other smaller parties.
It was an Interim National Government prior to the first General election, in which Dr. Mookerjee represented the Hindu Mahasabha and handled the important Ministry of Industries & Supplies. He held that the one organisation which had consistently encouraged and sustained communalism in the country was the Congress itself…‘If it is to be communalist’, [Mookerjee] argued, ‘to love one’s country, to love one’s community and not think ill of other communities, if we feel with, and attempt to unite 40 crores of Hindus living in India that have been liberated after 1000 years, if we try to recover our lost position in a manner which is 100% consistent with the dynamic principles of Hinduism for which Swami Vivekanand stood, I am proud to be a communalist.’ Neither pandit Nehru nor any other Congressman ever tried to reply to this argument and stand of Dr.
Mookerji. However, he refused to apply for the permit and was subsequently detained upon entry.
Accounts differ about where Mookerjee was held and under what conditions. On September 2, in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh unit was formed with Rao Krishana Pal Singh as president and Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay as secretary. Both colonial historians and Marxist historians have distorted Indian history.
Mookerjee could not be hypocritical (known today as being ‘secular’ in India and ‘politically correct’ all over the world) even if he tried to, and he did not. Furthermore, the treatment of the martyr after death is an important feature of martyrdom.
He and his organization play the saviours and underdogs in a story of mistreatment of Hindus at the hands of the Muslim League and the Congress.
These biographies are also opportunities to defend the values and the reputation of Hindutva through Mookerjee. However, in the Lok Sabha elections, it secured about 3.06% of the votes and 3 seats – Dr.
Mookerjee himself from Calcutta Southeast, Durga Charan Banerjee from Medinipur (both from West Bengal), and Umashankar Muljibhai Trivedi from Chittor, Rajasthan. He essentially came to represent perhaps a less provocative and socially alarming face of Hindutva through his political career.
Mookerjee, the Hindu Nationalist Project, and the Birth of Jana Sangh
The Jana Sangh was founded in 1951 as a pan-Indian party when the Mahasabha proved to be incompatible with Mookerjee’s political goals and association when it became a political risk after the assassination of Gandhi.
The BJS claimed credit as a national party started post-independence by an Indian unlike the Congress or Communist parties, and subscribing to an Indian Ideology. He was also president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946. Unlike other national parties like the Congress, the BJS was not privileged with funds, narratives, or well-known personalities.
