Since then he hasn’t looked back and his revolution-rousing One Source campaign for Absolut featuring the likes of Khuli Chana, Osborne Macharia, Trevor Stuurman, Victoria Kimani, Fabrice Monteiro and Sho Madjozi as Afrofuturist superheroes and adventurers, has garnered awards and acclaim around the world.
Nataal wiped away the tears to talk to Gonera just after he stepped off the DI stage.
Tell us about the making of the two Absolut films.
Those jobs were the hardest I’ve ever done but also the most joyful.
The film starts off with Ellis as a young high school swimmer who, when he gets heckled out of a 1964 North Carolina swim tournament ends up assaulting a cop. It was then though that he truly found his voice and began to focus on telling authentic African stories that reveal the true beauty of the continent. He is most known for directing the 2007 film Pride which starred Bernice Mac, Terrence Howard, Gary Sturgis, Tom Arnold and Kimberly Elise.
Clint Eastwood's youngest son, Scott Reeves, shows up briefly as a rival swimmer, but generally the opposing swimmers are nothing more than unfriendly faces in the pool. Sunu quickly worked his way up in the film industry, and within three short years garnered several prestigious directing awards, that were the result not just of his refreshing talent, but also of his courage, diligence and persistence.
Dubbed in the world of commercials' as one of the finest directing talents, he continues to produce a body of work with a unique voice that has inspired such prestigious clients as Nike, VW, Coca Cola and U.S Tennis Association to mention a few.
From "Glory Road" to "Facing the Giants" to Ellis' fictional neighbor "Rocky," "Pride" is one of those films that is nearly impossible to hate even while you're sitting there watching it and thinking "Haven't I seen this somewhere before?"
Yes, we've all seen this somewhere before.
Yet, despite the film's familiarity and all too predictable resolution, "Pride" is, dare I say it, an entertaining and often inspiring film.
While at Falcon, Sunu excelled in several sports including rugby, cricket, hockey and athletics. In particular, Evan Ross ("ATL" and "Life Support") shines as Reggie, a young man with a notable stutter and lack of self-confidence who becomes the heart and soul of PDR. G
The other supporting roles, including Gary Sturgis, Tom Arnold and Kimberly Elise, are a bit too underdeveloped to leave a lasting impression.
By 2018, his daughter had landed lead roles in two films.
While "Pride" occasionally dips into the kind of conflict that normally finds itself resolved within the confines of a 30-minute television sitcom (more than once I thought of "Good Times" while watching "Pride"), Gonera also gives "Pride" a refreshingly sincere, sweet and innocent feeling that doesn't depend upon artificial sweeteners, trumped up histrionics or unnecessary conflicts.

Sunu Gonera
Hailing from the townships of Zimbabwe during the time of the Civil War, Sunu has managed in a very short space of time, to carve out a career which sounds less like a real life and more like a movie.
Not once?
Even the altercation between the drug dealer and Ellis doesn't quite gel into a cohesive, convincing scene. I had folders of visuals that I’d been collecting for years and it was the right time to use them.
Gonera was then awarded a scholarship to the University of Cape Town, where he completed a degree in Organizational Psychology.[3]
Career
Sunu was a banker before he left his career to start as a runner in the film industry.
And Osborne Macharia is my partner in crime. Howard's take on Ellis, who continues coaching swimming in Philadelphia after 33 years and numerous Olympic hopefuls, is one of Pride, Determination and Resilience, a fact brought vividly to life by the film's team name, PDR (which also stands for Philadelphia Department of Recreation). He cut his teeth making advertisements for the likes of Nike and Coca Cola and his short film Riding With Sugar made it to Cannes.
Gonera’s dreams seemingly came true when he relocated to Los Angeles to direct his first feature, Pride starring Terrence Howard.
He eventually secured funding for his full-length script and Riding with Sugar premiered on Netflix on 27 November.[5] He also directed advertisements for Nike and Coca Cola. His short film Riding With Sugar made it to Cannes.[6]
