Updating Your Bio: When and How to Refresh It
Bios aren’t tattoos—they’re Snapchat streaks. In addition to her work with Balance Campaign, Dr. Shanley Alger is a member of the Annapolis Chamber Players and has been a guest artist with the Georgetown Quintet, and featured soloist with the Romanian National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Alba Music Festival.
This paragraph is so full of impressive details that the reader would easily get the impression that you ONLY play chamber music.
Imagine a fan stumbling onto your profile after hearing your song in a TikTok trend. Here are examples of the type of feel you should be going for.
For singer-songwriters:
- “Her lyrics cut like a stolen kitchen knife—raw, personal, and sharper than you’d expect.”
- Keywords: soulful vocals, storytelling lyrics, acoustic-driven.
For electronic producers:
- “His tracks are a glitched-out time machine—equal parts ’90s rave and AI daydream.”
- Keywords: synthwave, bass-heavy, experimental beats.
Avoid:
- “Genre-defying music for the soul.” (What does that even mean?)
- Fix it: “Think Dua Lipa meets Twin Peaks soundtrack—synth-pop with a dark twist.”

The goal is to make it engaging but concise. Slide that in. (You switched to first person here – saying “we” – bios should always be written in the third person as if you’re talking about some entity other than yourself, as you did in the rest of this bio. For presenters, this includes venues where you’ve performed.
It’s got depth, with plenty of quotes and information, but is easy to scan, and enjoyable to read:
Singer/songwriter Ben Harold has created a bio that emphasizes his musical history and achievements, telling his story in a way that makes you want to read it:
Jazz guitarist Sam Wilson has created a musician bio that’s a great example of combining all of the important elements.
Write an engaging introduction

- Why it works: Gritty origin story + stats + playful warning.
Pro tip: Steal these structures, but make them yours. The band has more festivals than they can count under their belt, including the Lilac Festival, the Real Beer Expo, Steampunk Festival, Park Ave Fest, Ribfest, Clothesline Arts Fest, I-Square Fall Festival and the Canandaigua Arts & Music Fest.
