It was very Andy Warhol-like, Velvet Underground-type.
PW: Did you do any more films for her when you came back to acting?
PKG: She never really cast me in anything, but she brought me in for a few auditions for some interesting projects.
First of all, I found doing episodic very hard work. So for me, it was really an exercise in learning a new way of working. That was the one thing that I found that I had a talent for and an interest in doing. And we did it a couple of times and he didn't give me any more each time. So I spoke with my agent, she contacted them, and they explained, "Well, one of our actors committed suicide and it's created quite a disturbing feeling on the set.
So I got this phone call from my agent saying that Claire wanted to bring me in. I'm like David Caruso; he was never happy with his work. At that time, I was quite cocky, and I thought, "If I can do it in L.A., I can do it in Canada." So I went back home.
But I had a wonderful time. They said, "We're doing the show and we'd like you to be Peter Kenidi." And the character is much older and yadayada.
I'm exploring that all the time. And Donovan said one thing, and it's one of the few things that have left an impression with me because they make you feel good. It gave me some insight into his character which made me realize that James would know this about him. Brian had been invited to Stratford [the Stratford Festival in Ontario] to direct "Guys and Dolls." So he asked me if I would be interested in coming in and auditioning for him.
It gave me a chance to work on my artistry and get performing experience.
PW: It sounds like it really let you get some of that energy out!
PKG: I think I really was hyperactive.
PW: And they had run out of Native roles in the movie by then?
PKG: Yeah, they had already been cast. Of reliving the confusion and the feeling the inadequacy and stupidity.
And then when I was doing "M. And also that I didn't look Native enough. I want to see him joke more!
