The first Paulus comic strip was published on February 2, 1946, in the Dutch newspaper Het Vrije Volk.

These included Paulus the deputy Sinterklaas and the Paulus winterbook. . This book was about Francis of Assisi.

Awards and Recognition

Jan van Oort received several awards for his work. In her book, she called her father Lepel Mansborg.

Paulus in Newspapers

Paulus the woodgnome first appeared in the daily newspaper Het Vrije Volk in 1946.

His grandfather, Johan Braakensiek, was a political cartoonist. Between 1974 and 1984 Dulieu drew his final series of comics about Paulus.

Apart from Het Vrije Volk the comics were also published in magazines such as Kris Kras, Bobo, Avrobode and Eva.

Paulus is a gnome who lives in the woods.

He wanted to work full-time on comic strips, even though he hadn't studied art.

He stopped his career as a cartoonist in 1984 when he was 63 years old. Jan loved music and was also very creative. He made all the puppets, scenery, and props by himself. These puppet movies were also shown in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia.

Later Comics

In the 1970s, Van Oort began a new series of newspaper comic strips.

These included English, German, South-African, Japanese, and Swedish.

Radio and Television

From 1955 to 1964, Paulus the woodgnome was a popular radio show. During the years more publications followed, including Paulus and Eucalypta, Paulus and the dragon, and Paulus and Skipper Mackarel.

Jan van Oort (born April 13, 1921, in Amsterdam; died November 29, 2006, in Arnhem) was a Dutch writer and cartoonist.

After the show was cancelled in 1963 he continued making new comic strips until 1967–1968, when he focused on a new project: a TV puppet series. He and his woodland friends were frequently being terrorised by a wicked witch called Eucalypta.

She was constantly brewing potions and casting spells to get them and was quite a scary character with an evil cackle.
