Mandela never planned to serve a second term as president. Her daughter Zenani Mandela was born in 1997, and died in 2010. A state funeral was held on Sunday, December 15, 2013. She was buried next to her mother on 17 July, the day before 18 July – her father’s birthday, known worldwide as Mandela Day.

He was held at Robben Island and later moved to other prisons.
In 1990, the South African president, Frederik Willem de Klerk, ordered Mandela's release. People often called him by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba, or as Tata ("Father"). For example, Margaret Thatcher once called the ANC a "terrorist organization" in 1987.
Following a lung infection, Nelson Mandela sadly died in December 2013, aged 95 years old.

Nelson Mandela’s spirit and values are still very much alive to this day, and he will forever be remembered. He wore them even at formal events. He became the first President of South Africa on April 27, 1994.
He wrote a book called “Long Walk to Freedom”, where people can read about the struggles he faced in his battle against discrimination and fight for equality.
He came from a Thembu royal family. For decades, countries around the world had put pressure on South Africa to end apartheid, but now the anti-apartheid movement had more support than ever.
Change for the better finally came in 1989. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does."
