Maria owes all of her achievements to hard work, a love of life, a realistic assessment of her own merits and being thankful for all that God has given her.
Career
Guleghina made her stage debut in 1985 as Yolantha at the State Opera in Minsk (Belarus) shortly before leaving Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics to pursue an international career. Many of the productions in which she has appeared have been broadcast on radio as well as being televised. This was followed by a highly successful recital at the Wigmore Hall.

With her daughter Natalya Maria moved back to Odessa, where she graduated from the vocals department of the Odessa Conservatory.
Her voice has such range and power that studio microphones fail during recordings.
Background
Maria Guleghina was born in Odessa, Ukraine (during the Soviet Era), to an Armenian father and a Ukrainian mother, where she studied voice at the Music Conservatory with Evgeny Nikolaevich Ivanov (under whose tutorship she remained even after graduation).
At La Scala she has performed in 15 new productions including Lucrezia in I due Foscari, Tosca, Fedora, Turandot, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Lisa in Pique Dame, Manon Lescaut, Abigaille in Nabucco, Leonora in La Forza del Destino conducted by Riccardo Muti in Tokyo. Having assessed the infinite possibilities of her vocals as well as her hard-working personality, Ivanov advised her to work on becoming a dramatic soprano.
She is particularly noted for her interpretation of the title role in Tosca. Doctors were not sure she would live and even suggested that her mother should leave the newborn girl at the hospital. She subsequently performed Tosca with the Metropolitan Opera in Japan and in the same year took part in the inauguration of the New National Theatre of Tokyo in a new production of Aida by Franco Zeffirelli.
The great conductors Valery Gergiev, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Riccardo Muti and others consider it an honor to work with her. She has performed on numerous occasions with the world’s great singers and conductors, among them Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson, José Cura and Samuel Ramey, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Fabio Luisi and Claudio Abbado.
Maria Guleghina is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including the Giovanni Zanatello Prize for her debut at the Arena di Verona, the Maria Zamboni Gold Medal, the 1999 gold medal at the Osaka Festival, the 2001 Bellini Prize and the Arte e Operosita nel Mondo in Milan.
She dreamt of becoming a ballet dancer, but her father was unsupportive of the idea. Generally, I love all things Armenian. She sang the opening aria (Aida) at the official opening of the new National Opera House in Oslo.
Throughout November 2009, she starred as Turandot in the opera Turandot at the Met in New New York
She represented Russia by singing during the closing ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver during the handover of the Olympic flag.
She has shared the stage with the crème de la crème: Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson.

None of this came easy.
Her voice of great power, warmth and energy and her immense acting skills have made her a regular and welcome guest throughout the world. Her performances are invariably rewarded with standing ovations at the world’s leading opera houses. Thus an emerging opera singer became an Armenian housewife.
“Mornings started with feeding the hens and irrigating the kitchen garden,” says Maria.
In 1991 she made her Wiener Staatsoper debut in Andrea Chénier and has returned to perform as Lisa in The Queen of Spades, Tosca, Aida, Elvira in Ernani, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Leonora in Il trovatore and Abigaille in Nabucco.
Before her 1995 stage debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she performed the title role in Fedora opposite Plácido Domingo, she had already performed in a critically acclaimed concert performance of Ernani at the Barbican with the Royal Opera.
