He has progressed into who he is today -- professional drummer/percussionist and music educator.
Pursuing his true passion and enhancing his talent through education, Kobie attended Vandercook College of Music studying all forms and genres of the percussion family with Marc "Max" Jacoby (vibraphonist/ mallet) and Kevin Lepper (percussionist), both teachers igniting him to reach greater achievements and goals.
And then Sonny
took me out into the hall and talked to me. It’s worse than being out in the jazz community, or
being out in the world anywhere, because at least they give you a better
chance.”
Watkins’s early heroes were all professional gospel drummers: Dana David
with the Winans, Michael Williams with Commissioned, Joel Smith with
the Hawkins family, and Kevin Brunson with the Thompson Community
Choir.
He said, ‘Keep thinking about the music.’ That was really inspirational. Kobie is a mentor, drummer, and percussionist who has built strong relationships with his peers from the Jazz, Latin and Gospel communities. But jazz is a broad church and the album is proof ...

Ron Blake: Mistaken Identity
by Jack Bowers
Once hailed as a promising young lion, Puerto Rico-born saxophonist Ron Blake is more a crafty old fox these days, bringing his wealth of experience and undeniable talent to bear on Mistaken Identity, his first album as leader in fifteen years.
You have to come in with intense, focused energy all the time. “I didn’t leave on bad
terms,” the drummer says. There were a few more dates in 2007, until Rollins let him go in July of that year. Kobie took up

High School, and later used it in his work as an elementary school music
teacher in Joliet, Illinois, where he also played oboe, flute, clarinet,
trombone, tuba, and French horn in order to demonstrate them to his
fourth- and fifth-grade students.
Alious bought a toy drum set for Kobie when he was nine and a real one
when he was 12.
Perhaps, among other things, this is my way of saying 'thank you' to them." Another way to thank them may have been ...

Andre Ferreri Quintetto: Numero Uno
by Jack Bowers
On Numero Uno, guitarist Andre Ferreri leads a tight-knit quintet, four of whose members appear on every number with alternating pianistsSean Higgins, Phillip Howe, Mark Stallings (Hammond B3 on the breezy Uptown Swing")--and one trumpeter (Brad Wilcox) who makes it a sextet on Avia Pervia." Tenor saxophonist Ziad Rabie shares the front line while bassist Anna Stadlman and drummer Kobie Watkins lay on the rhythm.
“It is very intense, very energetic,” he says of
playing with Rollins. They will point
to someone else and tell them to get on the drums. Additionally, since 2004 Kobie has played with a band leading teens in worship at a Christian Teen Camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
His experiences include a rich mosaic of styles, genres, interests and qualifications. “Once we started, there was no tension from anyone. Interested? That relationship led to Watkins himself joining Rollins band. Everyone was just playing like we had been playing
for awhile. He was a music teacher and band leader at public schools.
