Playing high level rugby at a time of the sanctions against South Africa, it meant very few test caps, thus he only represented his country in 13 tests between 1974 and 1981.

That also meant players were more available to their provinces and Kevin de Klerk would go on to pull on the red and white hooped jumper of Transvaal 107 times between 1971 and 1984. 

Following the 1974 test series against the British & Irish Lions, De Klerk also represented the Springboks against the French touring team in 1975, the All Blacks in 1876, a South American Jaguars team in 1980 and the 1981 team from Ireland in 1984.

He was still a scholar at Hill High in the south of Johannesburg when he joined Union and he immediately made the Transvaal Under 20 team, even before he played two Craven Weeks for Transvaal.

When Kevin de Klerk did his national service in Pretoria he found himself amongst men such as Du Preez, and Springboks Piston van Wyk, Kleintjie Grobler and Thys Lourens, all legends in Blue Bulls country.

Back in Johannesburg after a tough baptism in the Carlton Cup, Kevin de Klerk was recruited to play for Diggers, together with some other big names in the Transvaal club rugby scene.

Kevin de Klerk made his debut for the Springboks on 8 June 1974.

They set another record when all 15 players scored tries. 

Much later, in 1980, when the Springboks played the South American Jaguars at the Wanderers, four of the five members of the Green and Gold tight five were member of Diggers. 

Kevin de Klerk played his last few years out at Alberton where he retired in 1984 and coached for four seasons.

He was elected president of his beloved Golden Lions Rugby Union in July 2009 and was part of the big rebuilding process of the Lions brand, which brought much success in during the late 2000's.

He retired from this position in August 2018, aged 68, to spend more time with his family, and by doing so, brings down the curtain on a relationship that lasted all of 50 years.
