      • direct students to the Alvarez quotations at the end of the resource and ask them to use critical thinking to determine how they would fill in the missing words; then compare and contrast what they composed to what Alvarez wrote.
      • ask students to choose one of the Alvarez quotations and then explainorally or in written form why they agree or disagree with it.

      If you need an activity for early finishers or for extra credit, ask students to create a timeline, either one that features .

      Forced to return to the United States, Alvarez experienced discrimination and alienation, leading her to find solace in that “portable homeland — the world of the imagination.” She graduated Middlebury College in 1971 and received a Masters of Art degree in creative writing from Syracuse University in 1975.
