He’s enough of a techie and thinker to boast a patent in his name as co-inventor of a piece of advanced semiconductor lithography technology.
Iwata graduated with a B.A. in journalism and mass communications from San Jose State University. It has expanded beyond controlling and enhancing the brand with consumers and partners to include employee citizenship organization, workplace enablement, new-product demand-generation and a central role in IBM’s strategic planning.
He developed strategies that substantially grew the value of the IBM brand and repositioned the company at key inflection points: e-business, when the Internet was emergent; Smarter Planet, which described how all systems — from power grids and supply chains to healthcare and cities — would be transformed by the phenomenon of data; and IBM Watson, which heralded the era of artificial intelligence.
Jon is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; a director of the Ladies Professional Golf Association and chair of its nominating committee, and a director of The Center for Global Enterprise.
He is an inductee of the B2B Hall of Fame, the Marketing Hall of Fame, the CMO Club Hall of Fame and the Page Society Hall of Fame, which honors lifetime achievement in business communications.

Five years later he moved across the country to IBM’s headquarters in Armonk, New York. Jon holds a B.A. from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at San Jose State University.

Jon Iwata leads IBM’s marketing, communications and citizenship organization.
In 2020 he was also appointed inaugural Ogilvy Fellow at the Yale Center for Customer Insights; the fellowship was established to understand how business leadership is evolving in the era of stakeholder capitalism.
Jon reported to three IBM CEOs during two decades of significant transformation of the information technology industry, global business and geopolitics.

In 1995 he became vice president of corporate communications.He is chairman of the IBM Values and Policy Advisory Board and vice chairman of the IBM International Foundation.
Jon joined IBM in 1984 at the company’s Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley. He was appointed vice president, corporate communications, in 1995 and senior vice president, communications, in 2002. On July 1, 2008 he took on his current responsibilities over IBM’s unified communications, marketing and employee citizenship activities.
Iwata is a members of the UC Economic Advisory Group, the Technology Committee of the Museum of Modern Art and a trustee of the Arthur W.
Page Society. He is recognized for innovation – from creating Think Academy, a mobile- and cloud-delivered online university serving more than 375,000 IBMers, to the application of cognitive technologies in marketing and communications.
Jon reports to IBM Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Ginni Rometty.
Iwata reports directly to Chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano as a member of IBM’s Operating Team, Strategy Team and vice chairman of the IBM International Foundation.
Iwata is more than a corporate face or mouthpiece. His landed his first IBM job in 1984 in the communications department of the company’s Almaden Research Center.
That vision is also reflected in the IBM Smarter Planet advertising campaign which he kicked off in 2008.
Iwata sees the internet’s latest incarnation — what he calls Web 2.0 — as “tapping into the power of billions of people having the tools and the power to produce their own content and publish their own points of view and connect with each other.”
This passion for harnessing communications in all forms as a creative force in business is reflected in the way IBM has folded so many core functions into Iwata’s domain.
He is past chairman of the Arthur W. Page Society, a professional group of Chief Communications Officers.
In 2015, Jon was inducted into the CMO Club Hall of Fame. As IBM Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jon led the company’s global marketing, communications and corporate citizenship organization for a decade. He moved up to senior vice president of communications in 2002.
He is a past chairman of a group of chief communications officers called The Seminar.
Jon Iwata is Executive Fellow at Yale School of Management, an appointment he received upon his retirement from IBM in 2018, capping a 35-year career with the company.
