But the supreme court struck down the Alta and Lincoln measures. In 1854, Blaine moved to Maine to become part owner of a local newspaper. The effect of these changes was to move the east-west county line that had run between Hailey and Bellevue south, where it became the present northern boundary of Lincoln County; to move the county seat of Logan (which became Lincoln) from Bellevue to Shoshone; and to change the name of Alturas County to Blaine.

Although born in Pennsylvania, James G.
Blaine was one of the most illustrious political leaders the State of Maine ever produced.
He was Speaker of the House in the U.S. Congress, then a U.S. Senator and, on two later occasions, served as our country's Secretary of State. Despite being one of the most able figures of his day, Blaine`s maneuverings with politicians and big business earned him powerful enemies.
Among people deceased in 1893, James G. Blaine ranks 68. Blaine developed a reputation as a skilled parliamentarian and later was elected speaker of the house. Included in the original boundaries of Alturas were eight of the present counties of Idaho, plus substantial parts of six others, and smaller parts of two or three more.

James Gillespie Blaine (January 31, 1830 – January 27, 1893) was an American statesman and Republican politician who represented Maine in the United States House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, served as Speaker of the House from 1869 to 1875, and was a U.S.
senator from 1876 to 1881. He served three terms in the Maine legislature and in 1863, was elected to Congress.
Before him are Marian Seldes (1928), Barbara Broccoli (1960), Danny Carey (1961), Theodore Freeman (1930), Melinda Dillon (1939), and Elmo Lincoln (1889). Before him are Michał Elwiro Andriolli, Victor Schœlcher, Arnaud-Michel d'Abbadie, Aloys Sprenger, Samuel Baker, and Charles of Mount Argus. (The counties coming entirely from Alturas are Elmore, Camas, Blaine, Ada, and Owyhee.
While the constitutionality of such legislation has been challenged in recent years, late nineteenth century Idaho legislators looked favorably upon it and its namesake.
How did Blaine County come to be?
Blaine County was established as part of a larger realignment of Idaho’s original 13 counties. Before him are Metacomet (1639), Jim Jordan (1964), Simon Bolivar Buckner (1823), Hannah Van Buren (1783), Carolyn Maloney (1946), and Samuel Dexter (1761).
In 1859, Blaine became chairman of the Republican state party organization, a position he would hold for more than 20 years. Before him are Jhalkaribai, Gustav Lange, John Douglas, John Moresby, Karl Klindworth, and Clémence Royer.
