Became powerful storyteller

As she became more popular, Allende decided to devote all of her time to writing and quit her job as a school administrator. In addition she worked as a television interviewer and newscaster.

At the urging of her three grandchildren, Allende wrote her first book for young adults, City of the Beasts, which was published in 2002. The novel received a Los Angeles Times Book Prize nomination. Allende said she was determined to work as a young woman and started her writing career as a journalist.

Early years in Chile

Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942, in Lima, Peru.

She has written over 20 books that have been translated into more than 35 languages and sold more than 67 million copies.

In 1981, Allende began writing a letter to her grandfather, who was dying in Chile.

While on a lecture tour in San Jose, California, to promote the publication of Of Love and Shadows in the United States, Allende met William Gordon, a lawyer, who was an admirer of her work and with whom she fell in love. Her first novel, The House of the Spirits, was made into a film in 1994. Her best-known works include the novels The House of the Spirits and City of the Beasts.

Isabel Allende: Life and Spirits. In 1988 Allende's third novel, Eva Luna, was voted One of the Year's Best Books by Library Journal.
