“I started shooting with film 16 years ago, switching to digital 10 years ago. Today, with the great camera they developed it’s the best equipment I have ever had. His work has been featured on the covers of numerous magazines including Vogue Italia and Elle Italia.
In addition to his editorial work, Giampaolo Sgura has also directed several short films including "The Last Day" (2009) which won Best Short Film at the Rome International Film Festival.
I feel lucky to have such a great job. It’s like being a director. I guess architects do the same but they must wait for months or years to see their ideas becoming reality. Being a fashion photographer requires a lot of knowledge. Coming from an agricultural background, he studied architecture, although he always knew that his heart was in fashion.
We talk to him about how he made the leap into the fashion world and what inspires him.
Driven by origins
“I’ve learned a lot from my father, whose background is in agriculture.
I knew since I was 15 years old that I belonged to fashion. When I photograph I always think of a wide range of consumers that might be inspired by the work. Grown up in Puglia in a family devoted to olive oil production, as a boy he lived in Berlin and Milan, where he studied architecture and sharpened an obsessive passion for photography and fashion.
The relationship between light, spaces and bodies, along with clothes and accessories from the fashion industry, are the tools through which Sgura fine-tunes his visual narrative dedicated to the emotional distinctiveness and singular beauty of his subjects.
It changed my life. He has also shot campaigns for major brands such as L'Oreal and Lancome. He is best known for his work in magazines such as Vogue, GQ, and Harper's Bazaar.
Born in Milan, Italy in 1975, Giampaolo Sgura developed an interest in photography at a young age. Their software, Capture One Pro, makes my life and hours spent editing, much faster.
Other publications include Teen Vogue, Allure, Icon, Arena Homme Plus, Vanity Fair, Vman. Phase One has always been my favorite digital back from the start.
