Elizabeth C. Bunce (born 1974) is an American author and novelist who writes mysteries, fantasy, and ghost stories featuring strong female characters.[1] Her works are often inspired by folklore, and targeted toward young adult and pre-teen readers while also appealing to adults.[2] Her writing style has been referred to as literary fiction, and her works have been called “mysteries in fantasy dress,”[3] “spun with mystery and shot through with romance.”[4] Her works are infused with her research into history, science, culture, and etymology, often set in or inspired by historical places and times.[3]
Career
Bunce’s first novel A Curse Dark as Gold brought the author national attention, receiving the American Library Association’s inaugural William C.
Morris Award,[5] named a Smithsonian Notable Book,[6] and recognized by the Amelia Bloomer Project.[7] Bunce was nominated for the Edgar Award[8] and Agatha Award[9] for the first book in her Myrtle Hardcastle Mystery series, Premeditated Myrtle, which was named one of Amazon’s 20 Best Children’s Books of 2020, and a best book of 2020 on several other lists.[10][11][12] Two of her novels have appeared on Oprah Winfrey's Kids’ Reading List.[13][14] Three of Bunce’s novels have been named to the ALA's Best Fiction for Young Adults list[15][16][17] and three of her novels won Kansas Notable Book Awards.[18][19][20]A Curse Dark as Gold was selected as one of 150 Best Books in 150 Years, a list of books about Kansas or by Kansas writers for the state’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2011.[21] Her novels have received several starred reviews from major industry journals and review outlets.[22]
She is known for two series, both ongoing.
