Early Journey with Poetry

Ekiwah was born with cerebral palsy, weighing 900 grams - the size of a mango cupped in one hand, turning purple while trying to breathe. After the joint reading, Mary Oliver even wrote a preface for his new self-published book of poems in English, titled "The Coyote's Trace."

Because somehow being disabled might get in the way. Initially reluctant to undergo surgery due to a previous negative surgical experience and chronic pain, his parents were informed that without the surgery, his life could be at risk. He didn't think of this as poetry, but his mother, a homeopathic doctor and remarkable human being in her own right, would scribble his words down.

Upon finding this new teacher, Ekiwah lost interest in publishing and public readings. (2.) Dhyan Adler Beléndez (2019). It still feels like a miracle. Thus, he devoted himself to bringing poetry into spaces where it typically lacks a voice, such as clinics, hospitals, jails, rehab centers, homes for the elderly, and low-income schools.

I don't know if this is true at an international level and to what extent, but I know in Mexico, the country I grew up and live in, many people with disabilities are ashamed to leave their homes, or more accurately their parents are ashamed to take them outside or they feel they don't have the resources to do so. Even though we are no longer together and we go through bumpy rides, I have two people to thank first, for seeing me beyond The mask.

That's a practice my dad would have liked to participate in.

What makes me come alive is reading poetry out loud together. It's important to mention that at the time that was one of the most expensive surgeries which my family could absolutely not afford and doing it more cheaply because of my complicated case would have put me in severe danger.

My poetry teacher and mentor, Fran Quinn asked me what I wanted out of life. Editorial 17 was captivated by the literary craftsmanship and the way the collection addressed taboo themes related to disability through personal experience, including topics like sex, desire, and the quest for a home of one's own.

Ekiwah has contributed to literary and academic journal communities, especially as a featured poet in the collected volume "Beauty is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability,"edited by Sheila Black in 2011.
