When they first arrived there, they had three jobs each in order to make ends meet and provide for us. In contrast to Ghana, where his father grew up, he says, “Here [in the U.K.] we have some of the best water in the world. It’s a balancing act between focusing on your home market which is growing and thriving and starting from scratch in a brand new country.

And so many other things that are only possible when clean water is readily available. Even worse, why do we take our clean water for granted while there are millions of people in the world without it? That makes no sense! Some of the hardest challenges are getting the operations right—predicting inventory and meeting orders in a cost-effective way.

So, it was natural that I’d tackle this problem. It was a friend who initially introduced him to small business, and the two started a venture, entering the idea in a university business competition. Back then, he was building it from scratch, though he later switched to Shopify to give him time to focus on growing the business.

How has the Ghanaian culture shaped your perspective of privilege and responsibility, if at all?

Both of my parents moved to England from Ghana in the 1970s with dreams and hopes to provide a better life for our family. “That level of water consumption just had me always guzzling, always having a bottle with me, trying to stay hydrated,” he says.

With that said, there’s no better feeling when you see your company growing and thriving in multiple countries at the same time. The day in April 2013 that he decided to finally dedicate himself full-time to GiveMeTap, Edwin broke his leg. It’s not like in the US where it’s socially acceptable to ask for free tap water. Thanks to our partners and customers, we've provided clean drinking water to 200,000 people across Africa and diverted over 2.2 billion plastic items from landfills.
